IBM thinks the future belongs to computers that mimic the human brain and use quantum physics…and they’re betting $3 billion on it.

IBM is unveiling a massive $3 billion research and development round on Wednesday, investing in weird, science fiction-like technologies–and, in the process, essentially staking Big Blue’s long-term survival on big data and cognitive computing.

Over the next five years, IBM will invest a significant amount of their total revenue in technologies like non-silicon computer chips, quantum computing research, and computers that mimic the human brain.

The $3 billion funding round will go towards a variety of projects designed to catapult semiconductor manufacturing past what IBM physical sciences director Supratik Guha calls the “end of silicon scaling” in microchips. Essentially, IBM believes there will be a point in the medium-term future where microchips will no longer be made out of silicon because other materials will allow for faster and more complex computation. In a telephone conversation, Guha told Fast Company that his company sees an end to silicon scaling within the next three to four tech generations.

The new R&D initiatives fall into two categories: Developing nanotech components for silicon chips for big data and cloud systems, and experimentation with “post-silicon” microchips. This will include research into quantum computers which don’t know binary code, neurosynaptic computers which mimic the behavior of living brains, carbon nanotubes, graphene tools and a variety of other technologies.

IBM’s investment is one of the largest for quantum computing to date; the company is one of the biggest researchers in the field, along with a Canadian company named D-Wave which is partnering with Google and NASA to develop quantum computer systems.

The news of the funding round is surprising to some IBM-watchers; for the past year or so, rumors flew that IBM was considering an exit from the microchip business. Barring an unlikely sharp turn by Big Blue in business strategy, the funding round is essentially a shift of strategy by IBM. While it looks likely that IBM will sell their chip unit–the New York Times cites GlobalFoundries as a likely buyer–the investment means that IBM sees a new way to make money from chips: Long-term returns from holding valuable, potentially lucrative pate …
Apple’s mobile operating system is once again dominating Google’s operating system when it comes to online shopping.

Adobe, which is tracking online shopping, reports the following: iOS users drove four times as much mobile sales revenue as Android users, 79 and 21 percent respectively.

IBM’s data produced similar findings:

iOS vs. Android: iOS once again led the way in mobile shopping this holiday season, outpacing Android across three key metrics on Black Friday:

Average Order Value: iOS users averaged $121.86 per order compared to $98.07 for Android users, a difference 24.3 percent.•
Online Traffic:
iOS traffic accounted for 34.2 percent of total online traffic, more than double that of Android, which drove 15 percent of all online traffic.•
Online Sales:
iOS sales accounted for 21.9 percent of total online sales, nearly quadruple that of Android, which drove 5.8 percent of all online sales.

This is important for a few reasons.

For years, people have talked about Apple’s tiny market share when it comes to the phone market. Globally, Apple has 12% of the smartphone market, according to Gartner. Android has 82%. In the US, Apple has 42% of the market, and Android has 52%, according to comScore.

Market share is important because typically in tech, it’s winner-take-all. The more people you have using your platform, the better you will do.

In theory, the more people use Android, the more developers and publishers will tailor their websites and their apps to Android. In theory, Apple’s iPhone will be a second class citizen with second class apps. Eventually people will bail on the iPhone if it’s offering a second class experience.

But, in practice, Android’s market share advantage means nothing because iOS is more popular when it comes to usage, as demonstrated by these shopping data points. If you’re making an app or a website, you want it to work best on iOS because that is where the most lucrative customers are. So, in practice, Apple gets the best apps and the best web experience because that’s what makes sense for companies and developers.

You could argue that this isn’t indicative of usage, but merely demonstrates that iOS users have more money to burn. If that’s the case, it’s good for iOS, too. People with money to burn are an attractive cohort of users for developers and companies.

The ISO 26623 spindle interface is an innovative tooling system with maximum precision and particularly widespread in multi-task machines (turn-mill centres). The torque transmission and centring takes place via the polygon-shaped taper with flange surface contact. As a result, a fixed axial positioning and a high degree of torsional rigidity is achieved.

There are several mechanisms by which indexable carbide inserts can be mounted to a lathe tool holder. The screwdown locking style tool holder secures the insert with a countersunk screw through the hole of the insert and threaded into the tool holder pocket. Screwdown locking tool holders are primarily for positive style inserts. The clamp locking style tool holder secures an insert using a clamp that squeezes the insert in the pocket. The clamp is fastened to the tool holder with a machine screw. Clamp locking tool holders are primarily for TPG inserts. The multilock style tool holder is a combination of the screwdown style and clamp locking style. The insert is held in the pocket with both a lock pin screw through its cylindrical hole and a clamp squeezing its face. Multilock tool holders are primarily for negative style inserts. The wedge lock clamping style tool holder secures the insert with a specialized clamp that goes through the hole of the insert. The clamp is fastened to the tool holder with a machine screw. The advantage of the wedge lock clamping style is that it only takes a single action to index the insert, whereas the multilock style requires the loosening of both the lock pin and the clamp. This minimizes downtime. Wedge lock clamping tool holders are primarily for negative style inserts.
The local police in Ferguson, Missouri have used questionable tactics to quell riots in the wake of a cop shooting a black unarmed 18-year-old, from arresting journalists to using tear gas on peaceful protesters to bringing barking police dogs into the streets.

Using dogs on a crowd in a civil disturbance has been a no-no in policing since Selma, Alabama, former police chief Chuck Drago told Business Insider, referring to bloody civil rights protests in 1965. It doesn’t look good. It’s a PR nightmare if nothing else, and it just stirs people up.

Tensions between Ferguson cops and Ferguson residents actually started long the shooting death last weekend of Michael Brown days before he was supposed to start college. The city is 67% black, but only three out of 53 police officers in the city are African-American, The New York Times notes. There’s evidence of racial profiling in the city, as The Times notes that blacks account for 87% of traffic stops in Ferguson.

It started years before this … The shooting is just the spark that ignites it, said Drago, who served as a senior law enforcement adviser to former Florida governor Charlie Crist after his retirement from the police force.

But even since the shooting, the police department appears to have made a bad situation worse.

The public has questioned the police’s versions of the shooting. While police say Brown assaulted the officer who shot him, an eye witness said Brown was shot in the back and repeatedly said he didn’t have a gun.

The lack of transparency in the investigation has also added to the mistrust residents feel towards their police officers, as police have refused to name the officer who shot Brown.

When the police department tightens and batters down the hatches, [it] makes things so much worse, Drago said, adding that it should not be a surprise when such a tense community rises up.

“It’s a textbook example of how not to handle the situation,” St. Louis City Councilman Antonio French told The New York Times, referring to the general police response in the aftermath of the shooting. “Ferguson has a white government and a white mayor but a large black population. This situation has brought out whatever rifts were between that minority community and the Ferguson government.”

Cops have also given the impression they’re trying to hush things up by tear gassing a TV crew and arresting journalists for the Washington Post and the Huffington Post.

Brittany Wenger is changing the game when it comes to cancer detection technology — and, at 19, she’s just getting started.

Brittany Wenger is one seriously smart cookie. In 2012, the then-17-year-old submitted her artificial brain technology — which assesses tissue samples for breast cancer — to the Google Science Fair and walked away with the grand prize. It was no wonder: Her invention, which uses a type of computer program called neural networks, can identify complex data patterns and make breast cancer detection calls with 99 percent accuracy. But she’s not stopping there: Brittany hopes to help wipe out cancer completely.

Since she took home the gold two years ago, she’s been named one of Time’s 30 Under 30, given a truly inspiring TED Talk, and launched her app, Cloud4Cancer, which allows doctors to enter their own data and fuel continued cancer research. And did we mention she’s also holding down a full course load at Duke University? Um, yeah.

We recently chatted with Brittany about how she got started, her challenges along the way, and how she balances being a college student with breaking the barriers of cancer diagnostics.

How did you get into computer programming?

When I was in 7th grade I took an elective class on futuristic thinking. When we were assigned our final paper, I decided to write mine on technology of the future. The moment I started researching artificial intelligence and its transcendence into human knowledge, I was inspired. I went out and bought a coding textbook, and taught myself how to code. I remember one of the first projects that I ever worked on was an artificial neural network that taught people how to play soccer.

You’re a self-taught coder who went on to create a potentially game-changing cancer detection tool. How did that happen?

Well, it definitely didn’t happen overnight. I spent over five years working with neural networks, starting with an entire year of research to try and recognize patterns and connect breast cancer to artificial intelligence. I faced a lot of roadblocks along the way, as this was a very complicated program with no predefined solution. I went through thousands of pages of coding and data that was available through public domains, and performed over 7.6 million test trials. I two failed projects before finally succeeding on my third attempt, taking what didn’t work the …
