Smoking broom cigarettes may pose a number of health hazards. These include adverse cardiac effects such as headaches, uterine stimulant effects and residual effects. The inhalation of moldy plant material cannot be recommended as this may be associated with the development of pulmonary aspergillosis or similar fungal infections.
Scotch broom: Several species of ants are attracted to the seed appendages and disperse seeds while foraging. Seeds can survive 30 years or more under field conditions. About 50% of seeds produced in a season remain dormant. Scarification and/or a period of cool, moist vernalization enhances germination. Seeds heated to temperatures above 150º C for 2 minutes are killed, and seeds heated to 100º C for 1 minute appear to be more susceptible to fungal pathogens. Yet, burning in the field often appears to stimulate germination. Seeds germinate after the first rains in fall through early summer in inland areas, and winter through mid-summer in coastal regions. Seedlings can emerge from soil depths up to 8 cm, with optimal emergence from ~ 2 cm. Seedlings are subject to high summer mortality and browsing by wildlife during the first 2 years. Plants typically grow rapidly during years 3-4, often reaching a height of 2 m. Seed production begins during years 2 or 3, usually when plants reach a height of ~ 1 m. Shrubs are fully reproductive from years 3-5 through ~ 9. A mature shrub can produce ~ 2000-3500 pods. Seed production can decrease significantly during drought years. Individual shrubs live ~ 10-15(20) years.
‘In flowers without honey, such as the Broom, there is a curious way of exploding to expel the pollen. In the Broom the stigma lies in the midst of the five anthers of the longer stamens, and when a bee visits the flower those of the shorter explode and disperse their pollen on the bee pressing upon the closed edges of the keel petal. The shock is not enough to drive the bee away . . . The split now quickly extends further . . . when a second and more violent explosion occurs. The style was horizontal with a flattened end below the stigma; but when freed from restraint it curls inwards, forming more than a complete spiral turn. It springs up and strikes the back of the bee with its stigma. The bee then gathers pollen with its mouth and legs.’ (From The Fertilization of Flowers, by Professor H. Mueller, pp. 195-6)

Rated 5 out of 5 by Packerdrew from Very flexible I like the utility hook. As with most of the fasttrack items, if I need to move it laterally a little, i just remove it from the wall bar and slide it right or left. No hassels!

The word broom derives from the name of certain thorny shrubs (Genista and others) used for sweeping. The name of the shrubs began to be used for the household implement in Late Middle English and gradually replaced the earlier besom during the Early Modern English period. The song Buy Broom Buzzems (by William Purvis 1752–1832) still refers to the broom besom as one type of besom (i.e. a besom made from broom).
For lightweight materials you can use lead shields with screws, Red Head poly set plastic anchors, or Buildex polymer plated concrete screw anchors. Yes you will have to drill a hole in the mortar joint using a masonry bit.
POSTSENESCENCE CHARACTERISTICS: Plants tolerate frost, but typically die-back after severe cold winter conditions. Some branch death can occur during seasonal drought. Natural decline and senescence occurs over a period of years. Symptoms of decline in Scotch broom include an increase in the ratio of woody to green plant material, a thinning of stems, and a decrease in pod production. Eventually old plants die and topple over, opening the canopy for seedling establishment.
To make the most of your hooks, be sure to follow the instructions for applying and removing them, and make note of any weight limits. In some cases, you may want to consider using multiple Command wall hooks, to distribute the weight of an object more evenly.
