French broom: Pods brown at maturity, +/- compressed, 1-3 cm long, ~ 0.5 cm wide, densely covered with flattened long silky silvery to reddish-gold hairs, contain an average of 5-8 seeds. Seeds ovoid, shiny, smooth, black, ~ 2-3 mm long.

In early American traditional medicine, a fluid extract of broom was used as a cathartic and diuretic. Large doses of the extract were used as an emetic. 2 An alkaloid derived from the plant (sparteine) was once used to induce labor and as an antiarrhythmic, but has now been abandoned for safer compounds.

Spanish broom: Western North Coast Ranges, San Francisco Bay region, Sacramento Valley, western South Coast Ranges, western Transverse Ranges, South Coast, southern Channel Islands. To 600 m (2000 ft).

I thought the design of the mop was great when I was looking at this mop in the store. I don’t want to get my hands in the mop water so this looked good. I’ve had the mop two weeks and used it three times to mop a 6 x 10 section of vinyl. First mopping: immediately found that too much water is left in the sponge and there’s no way to get more out of it First mopping: found that once squeezed, the mop head doesn’t return to a flat position on it’s own First mopping: found that the scrub brush is not positioned correctly. If you want to use it on the floor you’d need to bend over and hold the mop handle very low to the floor Second mopping, handle bent at the weak spot where the wringer handle is Third mopping (trying to get more life out of this pathetic product) mop head comes off while I was trying to rinse it in the mop bucket. Gross…had to reach in and retrieve it. I’m looking for my receipt so I can return it. I rarely write reviews, or return products, but this mop is a joke.

The main alkaloid in the plant is l-sparteine found in the floral parts of the plant in concentrations ranging up to 0.22%, but may exceed 1.5% in other parts of the plant. In addition, the alkaloids sarothamnine, 4 genisteine, 4 lupanine 5 and oxysparteine 6 have been identified. A number of minor alkaloids and other componenets have also been isolated. 7 The flavone glycoside scoparoside has also been isolated, primarily from the flowers. Apparently, the toxic alkaloid cytisine is not present in this species. 8

One of the most common questions I hear when I am demonstrating my craft is, “What plant material is used for the broom bristles?” The material is called broomcorn (Sorghum bicolor). This plant is closely related to sweet sorghum (Sorghum vulgare), which is the plant used to produce sorghum molasses.  Broomcorn is an annual and, from a distance, looks like sweet corn the field. Yet, upon close examination, there are no cobs, just a large tassel on the top. That tassel is the part of the plant used for making brooms. Other materials can be used for the sweeper of a broom, but we’re focusing on traditional corn brooms.

In the context of witchcraft, broomstick is likely to refer to the broom as a whole, known as a besom. The first known reference to witches flying on broomsticks dates to 1453, confessed by the male witch Guillaume Edelin.[7] The concept of a flying ointment used by witches appears at about the same time, recorded in 1456.

If you’re not an experienced builder, toenailing the purlins into place can be tricky since it’s hard to drive nails and keep the purlins at their marks. Avoid this frustration by using fence brackets. Nail them to the outside studs on the front and back walls with 8d nails, keeping the tops 1-1/2 in. above the top of the shelf supports. This keeps the tops of the purlins and the shelves (installed next) aligned for a flat surface.

One source mentions that the United States had 303 broom factories by 1839 and that the number peaked at 1,039 in 1919. Most of these were in the Eastern United States; during the Great Depression in the 1930s, the number of factories declined to 320 in 1939.[6] The state of Oklahoma became a major center for broom production because broom corn grew especially well there, with The Oklahoma Broom Corn Company opening a factory in El Reno in 1906. Faced with competition from imported brooms and synthetic bristles, most of the factories closed by the 1960s.[6]

Meanwhile, back in Europe, the birch or besom broom industry, as it was called, had prospered since Saxon times in the sandy heath areas of south-east England, where the birch grows profusely. Known as Besom Squires, the craftsmen were numerous along the Surrey-Sussex border, and they employed assistants who worked individually in the coppices. The brooms were made of birch twigs attached to a handle of ash, hazel or chestnut.

Garbage. Waste of money. First time I tried to use the wringer one of the plastic pin things broke. Not the ones that twist on and off to replace mop head. One of the pins in the center of the head assembly. How can I return it if it is dirty and extremely odd shape box that was beat up in transit? I guess I am out the money. DO NOT BUY, unless you want to take the chance that you end up with a good one. One star was more than I wanted to rate it, if there was a ZERO rating I would have used that rating.
