The Summer over, in September 1988, Andy Crane returned to presenting the afternoons. Over the next few months the Broom Cupboard grew more and more cluttered, with no effort being made to tidy up the accumulated junk. This gave a rather anarchic feel to the links, a feel that was added to when, in late 1988, a noisy young duck made his home in the Broom Cupboard.

A very popular series running on Children’s BBC at this time was BRB Internacional’s 26-episode Around The World With Willy Fog. BRB, based in Madrid, had produced the hugely successful Dogtanian series which the BBC had acquired and shown several times previously on Children’s BBC. Willy Fog was based on the novel by Jules Verne and portrayed all the characters as animals. The theme tune was rather catchy and was sung by Andy on more than one occasion, who even trotted out the Spanish version one afternoon. Accompanied by postally distributed songsheets, the interest peaked with the mounting of National Willy Fog Day, on which Andy again sang the opening title music, only this time he did so from one of the Presentation studios, keyed afront of the titles and dressed up in turn as all of the characters.
When we first dove into broom research, we discovered that no one else reviews brooms, dustpans, or dust mops—individually or as a category. We found a list of best-selling brooms, a slideshow of “the best brooms,” and a Tip of the Day from Consumer Reports that points out that brooms don’t use electricity, but vacuums do. (The more you know!) With so little information out there, the only way to find the best cleaning tools was to get down and dirty with a few dozen of them.
Our pick is well-designed, great at sweeping, and comfortable to use. (It’s pretty cute too, not that anyone is buying a broom for its dashing good looks.) On top of all that, it’s the least expensive broom we tested—only $10, and that’s cheaper even than the other brooms that also lacked a dustpan. Our survey found that most people are willing to pay up to $20 for a great broom. The Casabella costs only half that, and it’s the best of the bunch.

If you want to make the shelves more rigid as well as more attractive, nail on 1×2 front edges (Photo 6). Use an air nailer or predrill if hand nailing. Finally, line up the shelves and attach them to the brackets from underneath with screws 1/2 in. longer than the depth of the bracket.
Eric Pickles would not make the ideal occupant of the original London broom cupboard — a 60 square-foot former janitor’s room in a block in Knightsbridge, which was sold for £36,500 in 1987 and recently valued at £200,000. But is that any reason to prevent more slender figures from seeking arelatively affordable bolthole in central London?

I was using the OXO broom that the dustpan came with. I am not the only one who reports having this problem (some of the lower star reviews complain about this on amazon). I wonder if my flooring is to blame (tile).
I like those dust mobs! I think I’ll look into them. Personally I use and prefer a Swiffer because of its ease of use—and because my apartment is not that huge, so the cost is acceptable. My problem with microfiber cloths is that they bind so many dust balls, so I don’t want to put them in the same laundry cycle as my clothes. I also have a spray mob, and I really do like it, but washing the microfiber cloths is just annoying because of that. If my bathroom floor is really dirty, I occasionally even use the wet Swiffer sheets just so that I don’t have to deal with that wet and dirty microfiber cloth. What am I to do with a single cloth a week? In my country at least, those Swiffer sheets get burnt, not put into the ground.

Children’s BBC TWO returned in autumn 1990 with a further season introduced by Andi and Simon. Programmes once again included an omnibus edition of the previous week’s two editions of Blue Peter and the acclaimed culture series, Boxpops. In addition to features and guests populating the links, a phone-in game, The 9.25 Express was played each Sunday. In this two callers competed against each other for chance to win prizes, the eventual winner being shown a selection of prizes in quick succession and having to shout stop on the one they wanted.
