In Disney’s 1940 film Fantasia, Mickey Mouse, playing The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, brings a broom to life to do his chore of filling a well full of water. The broom overdoes its job and when chopped into pieces, each splinter becomes a new broom that flood the room until Yen Sid stops them. This story comes from a poem by Goethe called Der Zauberlehrling (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice). The Disney brooms have had recurring cameos in Disney media, mostly portrayed as janitors, albeit not out of control or causing chaos such as in the original appearance.
‘In flowers without honey, such as the Broom, there is a curious way of exploding to expel the pollen. In the Broom the stigma lies in the midst of the five anthers of the longer stamens, and when a bee visits the flower those of the shorter explode and disperse their pollen on the bee pressing upon the closed edges of the keel petal. The shock is not enough to drive the bee away . . . The split now quickly extends further . . . when a second and more violent explosion occurs. The style was horizontal with a flattened end below the stigma; but when freed from restraint it curls inwards, forming more than a complete spiral turn. It springs up and strikes the back of the bee with its stigma. The bee then gathers pollen with its mouth and legs.’ (From The Fertilization of Flowers, by Professor H. Mueller, pp. 195-6)

Eventually, broom-making followed national expansion to the western states, where broomcorn was considered to grow better. By the turn of the 20th century, the industry had significantly declined in the Northeast. Following the larger trends of industrialization in all trades, small broom shops in the United States gradually expanded into factories to meet demand, their manufacturing techniques continuing require skilled, hands-on labor, until 1994, when NAFTA made Mexican brooms cheaper and forced many American outfits to close. Currently, most of the United States’ natural fiber brooms come from south of the border, with only a few local makers remaining.

By about 1810, the sorghum used in brooms, had acquired a new name, Broom Corn, as the British called all seed bearing plants, corn. The sorghum also looks similar to the sweet corn plant, and its tassel had become the broom material still used in quality brooms today.
I’m thinking the way to be sure to detect any power feeds reliably is turn everything in the apartment on when scanning, since it only detects live circuits. That way any circuits in there should be active at the time.
Stud finders are very helpful. The most basic model works with drywall walls fastened to either wood or metal studs just fine. For plaster walls a “deep scan” model works fine in an old home like mine. Slightly higher end models will also find live electrical circuits. I recommend one of these. Just keep in mind that stud finders measure a relative change in density. As such it alarms when you reach the edge of a stud, not the middle. You have to make 2 marks on the wall, (or ceiling), one for each edge. When you do this you will notice that they are about 1.5 inches apart, and the stud is between these 2 points.

French broom: In Australia, seeds germinate in spring and fall. Fire appears to stimulate seed germination. Where seeds are present in the soil, a large flush of seedlings may emerge on newly burned sites. Development is similar to that of Scotch broom. Pods are often copiously produced.
In the context of witchcraft, broomstick is likely to refer to the broom as a whole, known as a besom. The first known reference to witches flying on broomsticks dates to 1453, confessed by the male witch Guillaume Edelin. The concept of a flying ointment used by witches appears at about the same time, recorded in 1456.

To make a hearth broom, 28 heads of broomcorn are used for the inside layers of bristles and 17 heads for the outside layer. Each head is measured with a cubit (the distance between your elbow to your longest finger). Put the knuckle of the corn, the place where the head meets the stalk, at your elbow. If the bristles, or brush, are past the tip of your fingers, that stalk is a keeper. If the material is too short, it will be used for a whisk broom later.

Cooking at this time was much different than it is today. Stoves did not exist. They had not yet been invented. Cooking was done outside, over an open fire, or in a huge fireplace in the kitchen. Reflector ovens, and pots hanging from chains, were used to prepare the meals. Wood had to be carried in for the fire, and the ashes had to be carried out. In between, the fire had to be tended to provide just the right flame, coals and heat. A big and messy job. So, a broom was an important tool in keeping the hearth area clean. Unfortunately, good brooms did not exist, and dust and ashes were a part of life.
Scoparin, the other principal constituent, is a glucoside, occurring in pale-yellow crystals, colourless and tasteless, soluble in alcohol and hot water. It represents most of the direct diuretic activity of Broom.
One source mentions that the United States had 303 broom factories by 1839 and that the number peaked at 1,039 in 1919. Most of these were in the Eastern United States; during the Great Depression in the 1930s, the number of factories declined to 320 in 1939. The state of Oklahoma became a major center for broom production because broom corn grew especially well there, with The Oklahoma Broom Corn Company opening a factory in El Reno in 1906. Faced with competition from imported brooms and synthetic bristles, most of the factories closed by the 1960s.
