Even if you usually grab the vacuum when it’s time for some cleaning, it’s still worth it to have a broom and dustpan on hand as a backup or alternative. Not only can mechanical failure or a power outage curtail a cleaning machine’s ability to work as noted, but the loud noise of these devices can be a limiting factor as well. A broom’s sweep is all but silent, so you can do some cleaning even when others are sleeping, or when you yourself simply don’t want to hear a loud noise.
After a year of using our broom pick, we’ve found it has held up well, though it’s necessary to clean it out more regularly in the tub the older it gets. The ends have frayed a teensy bit more, so they tend to grab onto pet hair more than they did when the broom was new. It’s not really a problem, since the broom still cleans pet hair and dust as well as the day we got it.
Soft-bristled brooms, usually made from nylon are what homeowners tend to use on hardwood surfaces. It’s well known that grime, sand and dirt are just a few of the enemies of hardwood floors. To avoid excessive wear damage to your wood or its finish, it is always recommended that you sweep your floor every day. This is the best time to use soft-bristled brooms. Keep in mind that brooms with stiff bristles may scratch the surface of your floor. You should also use a different broom for your kitchen and outside areas, so you can prevent spreading of cooking debris or food spills throughout your house.
I found that a broom’s performance isn’t related to its price, or even its brand. The Garrett Wade Heavy Duty Garden and Garage Broom was a top performer among corn brooms, while the Garrett Wade Angled Bristle Outdoor Patio Broom crumbled almost as soon as a tester touched it, losing three bundles of bristles in 15 minutes. The $14 Quickie Bulldozer performed better than the $45 Weiler Palmyra Fiber Garage Brush. A broom that cost less than $20 performed better than a $45 model, and one of our top picks is sold by the same firm that offers a broom that shed bundles of bristles as soon as it touched the ground.

Storage. Being able to conveniently store a broom can be very handy and can prevent accidents from the broom falling over and hitting other items. This rack is sturdy, but to be expected of a 4′ piece of metal tubing costing $100. The key to capacity is to support multiple tools on each hook. The sales literature you can hang hooks on the back side. This would be great for wide tools like a push broom. Unfortunately, it isn’t so. The short hooks fit flush to the wall. So there is no way to mount a tool on the hook. The result is a 50% reduction in potential mounting area. It would work, however, if the rack were mounted on exposed studs.
Love this broom for picking up dog hair all over my house! I tried a variety of regular brooms and they would certainly sweep up a pile; but I could also immediately go back and sweep up a second pile. This rubber got it all with one round!
The product uses flagged bristles that can make it easier for you to clean a larger surface area. They are also extremely soft and due to their feathered texture, they can grab both dust and dirt effectively.
Onesweep on steroids maybe. If you like that one, you will love this one. It is far sturdier, and it works way better thanks to the higher quality head. It also comes with a handle that is one piece instead of several that you have to screw together.
The quality synthetic bristles are easy to split up. They make the cleaning process efficient and easy with the comfortable handle grip. It is perfect for sweeping bathrooms, kitchen, porch, garage and other dry areas of home. The synthetic bristles are connected with the hardwood block which is further connected to a proactive stick for premium results.
On hard floors, you will basically sweep like normal. As you pull, a static charge will begin to build. This charge sucks dirt and debris in toward the broom, and keeps it close as you sweep. This action makes your job easier, and allows you to quickly finish with less frustration. The strong charge will also prevent debris from flying away or becoming airborne as you clean.
The best material for a reusable dust mop head is microfiber, because it’s the most effective at attracting and absorbing dust, and it lasts the longest when cared for properly. Cotton is the worst option because it can rot, it stretches when washed, and it must be treated with chemicals to attract and hold dust. Synthetic microfiber blends have none of those drawbacks. The backing of the dust mop head can also be cotton or synthetic, and you’ll want a synthetic backing for the same reason—cotton stretches when washed and rots as bacteria consume the organic material.
Rubbermaid presents us with a unique broom holder. Unlike the holders discussed above that you mount on the wall, this particular brand is actually a corner tool rack. The corner storage maximizes space usage giving the rack capability to hold up to 30 tools. Its hardened plastic construction makes the tool rack sturdy and compact yet lightweight and portable.
Dustpan care is similar. Don’t store one sitting on the rubber, because you can permanently warp that lip and ruin your dustpan. Hang it up. Clean your dustpan (and brush, if it comes with one) with some warm soapy water, then shake each out and air-dry.
