This man was as hard-tempered and hard-handed as Samson; he always spoke in a rough, impatient voice, and if I did not move in the stall the moment he wanted me, he would hit me above the hocks with his stable broom or the fork, whichever he might have in his hand.

…Good thing you mentioned regular stud finders don’t scan deep enough for plaster walls. However, after I got the deep scan one (but before opening it) I noticed in the fine print it says not recommended for use on lath and plaster. If that’s true, what the heck does it take for one you can use on plaster?…

Scotch broom: Deciduous, late summer to early spring. Seedlings can out-compete conifer seedlings and prevent reforestation. Introduced from southern Europe and northern Africa. Three biocontrol agents are currently established in California. They are the Scotch broom seed weevil (Apion fuscirostre), twig miner (Leucoptera spartifoliella), and the accidentally introduced Gorse or broom tip moth (Agonopterix nervosa). These insects do not attack other brooms. A number of native insects also feed on the shrubs. However, insect damage has not yet been severe enough to control infestations.

The broom is really good and efficient but the dustpan is terrible. Barely picks up anything especially not crumbs. I’d recommend buying the broom separately or buying the set and buying a separate dustpan because the one that’s included won’t cut it. I stopped sweeping to write this review lol

A broom is a cleaning tool consisting of usually stiff fibers (often made of materials such as plastic, hair, or corn husks) attached to, and roughly parallel to, a cylindrical handle, the broomstick. It is thus a variety of brush with a long handle. It is commonly used in combination with a dustpan.

One source mentions that the United States had 303 broom factories by 1839 and that the number peaked at 1,039 in 1919. Most of these were in the Eastern United States; during the Great Depression in the 1930s, the number of factories declined to 320 in 1939.[6] The state of Oklahoma became a major center for broom production because broom corn grew especially well there, with The Oklahoma Broom Corn Company opening a factory in El Reno in 1906. Faced with competition from imported brooms and synthetic bristles, most of the factories closed by the 1960s.[6]

Nail the panels with 8d nails. Drive the nails snug with a smooth-face hammer so you won’t mar the siding. Drive nails straight, not at an angle. Keep nails 3/8 in. from panel edges and 2 in. from corners. Hold the side panels in place (don’t nail them yet) and mark them along the top of the rafters. Cut them to size and nail them into place (Photo 6).

—Description—It grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet and produces numerous long, straight, slender bright green branches, tough and very flexible, smooth and prominently angled. The leaves are alternate, hairy when young the lower ones shortly stalked, with three small, oblong leaflets, the upper ones, near the tips of the branches, sessile and small, often reduced to a single leaflet. Professor G. Henslow (Floral Rambles in Highways and Byways) says with reference to the ‘leaves’ of the broom: ‘It has generally no leaves, the green stems undertaking their duties instead. If it grows in wet places, it can develop threefoliate leaves.’ The large bright yellow, papilionaceous, fragrant flowers, in bloom from April to July, are borne on axillary footstalks, either solitary or in pairs, and are succeeded by oblong, flattened pods, about 1 1/2 inch long, hairy on the edges, but smooth on the sides. They are nearly black when mature. They burst with a sharp report when the seeds are ripe flinging them to a distance by the spring-iike twisting of the valves or sides of the pods. The continuous crackling of the bursting seed-vessels on a hot, sunny July day is readily noticeable. The flowers have a great attraction for bees, they contain no honey, but abundance of pollen.

Stud finders are very helpful.  The most basic model works with drywall walls fastened to either wood or metal studs just fine.  For plaster walls a “deep scan” model works fine in an old home like mine.  Slightly higher end models will also find live electrical circuits.  I recommend one of these.  Just keep in mind that stud finders measure a relative change in density.  As such it alarms when you reach the edge of a stud, not the middle.  You have to make 2 marks on the wall, (or ceiling), one for each edge.  When you do this you will notice that they are about 1.5 inches apart, and the stud is between these 2 points.
