An excellent broom can move large debris like leaves or small gravel, but also sweep up fine particles and sand. It should be light enough to move easily (the brooms in our all weighed 5 lbs. or less), and have a sturdy handle that stays attached without coming unscrewed mid-sweep. Ideally, the handle can be replaced when necessary (because no handle lives forever).

Not just any broom, but one that they thought could be essential to the sport of curling, which relies on the best broom handling out there as teams strategically cajole a polished granite rock across a sheet of ice.

Now that you know how to take care of your cleaning tools, how do you know when it’s time to replace them with new ones? Both cleaning experts told us that a broom’s condition is visual: “If it looks bad, it is bad.” When the bristles are broken, bent, or falling out and the broom is more of a hindrance than a help, it’s time to get a new one. However, if the ends of the bristles are frayed somewhat uniformly, don’t panic. Those are called flagged bristles, and are frayed intentionally to make the broom better at trapping dust. A great, well-cared for broom should last several years of weekly use.

Lots of people like the $7 OXO Good Grips Compact Dustpan and Brush Set, but it’s way too small to use as your primary dustpan. It also doesn’t have any kind of handle or grip, and the brush is really hard to remove from the dustpan once it’s locked in.

The Libman broom and dustpan featured here are terrible. The broom’s bristles are incredibly stiff and shoot dirt all over the place when you’re sweeping. The dust pan is bad because it has a huge ridge designed to keep the dirt in the pan, but combined with the stiff bristles of the broom this ridge acts like a ramp for launching dirt across the room.

Despite all the modern inventions to save us effort doing household chores, there are certain tasks that are still best done the old-fashioned way. Sweeping the floor, or a sidewalk, or walkway is one of those tasks. Still, there are different types of brooms, and each one is good on a different type of surface. You also have to be aware of what kind of things can you pick up with the broom: Is it good for getting up spills as well, or only for dry dust and sand? Here is a guide to some of the best brooms on the market.

If you’re all for getting your hands dirty in the yard, but less enthusiastic about the clean-up, the Haaga Topsweep 255 will make quick and easy work of tidying. This people-powered, push machine features a dual-action sweeping system with rotating brushes and can pick up wet and dry debris, including everything from dust and cigarette butts to pulled weeds and hedge clippings, to even bigger debris, like the Junior’s stray juice boxes. Everything gets brushed into a built-in collection unit, stirring up very little dust. This lightweight model is great for walks and drives. It can be easily assembled without tools and stores flat. For larger spaces, consider the heavy-duty Haaga 696.

I’m assuming you already purchased a broom, but as an FYI for anyone else reading this, I ordered from Amazon on May12th and received it on the 25th, even though it said 2-5 months. Amazon is generally really conservative on their estimates.

The O-Cedar Dual-Action Flip Mop and refills are available from most retailers, and they’re easy to find online, too. Our pick costs $19, and refills are $10 each from Amazon, but we found our pick for $13—and its refills for $7 to $8—in Target, Home Depot, and Walmart. The O-Cedar and its refills are less expensive and much more effective than other dust mops we tested.

The $25 Casabella Height Adjustable Broom with Dustpan is the pinnacle of overdesign. Its adjustable pole is awkward and heavy, and the whisk brush that snaps into the broom’s head is loose and falls out. When we unpacked the broom, a ton of bristles fell out. Worst of all, it’s not very good at sweeping.

A corn broom is what you’d expect a witch to ride on, with a bundle of fibers called a head tied to the end of a handle, which is generally made of wood. Corn broom heads, generally made of some kind of plant fibers, are attached directly to their handles. You can’t replace corn broom handles without taking the entire head apart; the bristles are glued and clamped to the handle and sewn together further down the head. The advantage of corn brooms is that they look and and feel like larger, stiffer indoor brooms, and are easy to use for small areas, light debris, and when sweeping out tight corners.
