New research suggests skincare tailored to individuals’ DNA may be the best way to combat the appearance of ageing

Those who believe that beauty is only skin deep may need to think again. For the first time, scientists have gone right into our DNA to develop the most advanced anti-ageing serum ever created.

The new treatment, developed by one of Britain’s leading scientific innovators, is personally tailored to each individual and could revolutionise how women – and maybe even men – approach their daily skincare regime.

It relies on a new microchip that allows the product’s creators to analyse a person’s genetic code within just 30 minutes. Through this, they can discover how fast their body degrades collagen – the structural protein that keeps the skin plump and supple – and their level of antioxidants, which protect against damaging free radicals.

Using this information, they develop a personalised anti-ageing cream to deliver the right amount of collagen and antioxidants to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Clinical trials over 18 months have already suggested that the product, named Geneu (pronounced ‘gene you’), reduces fine lines and wrinkles by up to 30 per cent within just 12 weeks.

The skincare range was developed by Prof Chris Toumazou, Regius Professor at Imperial College, London, who invented the cochlear ear implant, which helped 10,000 deaf children to hear, the artificial pancreas for Type 1 diabetics and the wireless heart monitor.

The range is possible because of his latest invention, a handheld microchip device, which can sequence DNA in 30 minutes. He recently won European Inventor of the Year 2014 for the breakthrough.

Prof Toumazau hopes that by bringing the technology into the consumer arena, it will help the public get used to the idea of DNA checks which will ultimately benefit their health and encourage an era of personalised medicine.

“It’s not really skincare, it’s skin health,” he said. “The skin is the largest organ in the body.”

At Geneu’s New Bond Street clinic in central London, doctors take a cheek swab before isolating the DNA strands and injecting them into the microchip, which is then fed into a sequencing computer. In 30 minutes, the profile is ready and a serum can be created.

Dr Maria Karvela, one of the scientific advisers at Geneu, who administers the test said: “As soon as I heard about Chris and the microchip, I wanted to be part of it. It really is cutting-edge science.”

Most people degrade collagen at an average speed, but …

Early note shows delight at birth of his daughter while later letters show fame was beginning to be a trial

The letter from the 22-year-old Albert Einstein revealed his delight at fathering a daughter, Lieserl, with his sweetheart, former classmate and future wife, Mileva Marić. How the new mother took the missive is less than clear.

Posted to her from Berne, Switzerland, on 4 February 1902, the letter conveys Einstein’s excitement at hearing of his daughter’s birth at Marić’s family home in Serbia, but swiftly launches into questions about the new arrival’s health and appearance. “Is she healthy and does she already cry properly?” Einstein asked. “What kind of little eyes does she have? Whom of us two does she resemble more? Who is giving her milk? Is she hungry? And so she is completely bald. I love her so much and I don’t even know her yet!”

The letter goes on to express Einstein’s fascination with the idea of having a baby himself (“it must be so interesting!”) before making a request of Marić, who was still recovering from the birth. “When you feel a little better, you must make a drawing of her.”

The letter is among 5,000 searchable documents from the first 44 years of Einstein’s life, which go online free on Friday in their original German and in English translation. The letters, diaries and scientific papers represent the contents of The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein from Princeton University Press, and cover the time up to Einstein’s Nobel prize in physics for the photoelectric effect in 1921, and his long voyage to the Far East the following year. More volumes will be added to the collection as they are printed.

“We want to make everything accessible to a much wider audience than just the scholars, historians, physicists and philosophers,” said Diana Kormos-Buchwald, director of the Einstein Papers Project. “It’s been a challenge to get all the material online, but I’m extremely thrilled that we have succeeded.”

Though Einstein did not keep many of his earliest writings, the collection gives an extraordinary view of his transformation from an unexceptional student into the staggering intellect who developed the principle of relativity, proposed that light behaved as particles, or “quanta”, and showed that energy and mass were two sides of the same coin.

Within the documents are early signs of the force Einstein was to become. In a French essay, a 17-year-old Einstein writes that while a happy man is too satisfied with the present to dwell too …

It’s a sad day for video games as Ralph Baer, the “father of video games,” has died at the age of 92.

He was a prolific inventor who earned more than 150 patents in his life, but his most famous work was creating a machine known as the Brown Box. It was later released in 1972 as the Magnavox Odyssey, the first home video game console. Gamasutra confirmed Baer’s passing.

It’s a reminder for us all that the video game industry is still pretty young, and many of its pioneers are still alive. But Baer’s passing is also a reminder that it’s good to preserve the industry’s history and honor its professionals while they’re still alive.

Baer earned the National Medal of Technology — the nation’s highest honor for inventors — from President George W. Bush in 2006 for Baer’s work in starting the video game industry. He invented toys such as the light gun, a peripheral for video game consoles. He also created the interactive memory game, Simon.

He was born in Germany in 1922, but had to flee the Nazis. His family fled two months before the Kristallnacht, or Night of Broken Glass, when the Nazis attacked Jewish businesses and homes. His family moved to Holland and later to the U.S.

By now it’s become clear that Scandinavians and Nordic nations do a lot of things better than other countries. They have the smallest gender gaps, among the highest test scores, and the lowest levels of inequality.

Now, they’re set to rub their transportation superiority in our faces.

Finland’s capital, Helsinki, is about to launch a program that could virtually eliminate car ownership and give its residents the ability to plot an on-demand commute from their phones.

It’s mostly the vision of Sonja Heikkilä, a 24-year-old Helsinki transportation engineer.

Her idea was to create a real-time marketplace for customers to choose among transport providers and piece together the fastest or cheapest way of getting where they need to go. The providers’ services would be distilled into an app through which a customer could plan a route.

In her master’s thesis, Heikkilä used the character of Taneli, a 34-year-old married father of four young children, to demonstrate how the whole thing works. Helsinki already has a dial-up bus service called Kutsuplus (Finnish for “call plus”), which for more than a year has been letting riders dial up a minibus on their phone, choose their route, and select whether they want their own private ride, according to Wired. Here’s what the Kutsuplus app looks like:

Heikkilä’s vision combines minibus shuttle service with city bicycles and ride-sharing to all but eliminate the need for cars:

[Taneli] usually bicycles with his own bike to a station, ascends a bus, and carries the bicycle with him in the bus or leaves his own bicycle at the station and continues the trip with a city bike.

In case the conditions are not satisfying for bicycling, Taneli finds a car or ride-sharing service with the help of a platform that he uses through the mobile phone. In addition, a daily demand responsive transport service, such as Kutsuplus, fetches [his son] and his classmates from preschool and conveys them [home], where they can continue spending the afternoon together.

One app would allow to plan the entire route, including all modes, she told Business Insider in an email. However, there would be several competing apps, as there would be several private companies running the mobility operator business.

Heikkilä said the idea came about because Helsinki is growing too fast for its current transportation options, with a population projected to increase 40% in the next 35 years.

As a result, many people are forced to own a car, but 95% of a car’s life is spent …

Please Note: For best results, You should always dust mop or sweep the floor with a broom before you attempt to clean it with a damp or wet mop head. Dry particles like hair and dust are much easier to clean when dry.

Ideally, a kitchen cabinet can hold both brooms and mops, as these two tools do the lion’s share of the work in this room. In addition to a tall, narrow space to hold them, you’ll need a safe place for cleaning solutions.
