Brittany Wenger is changing the game when it comes to cancer detection technology — and, at 19, she’s just getting started.

Brittany Wenger is one seriously smart cookie. In 2012, the then-17-year-old submitted her artificial brain technology — which assesses tissue samples for breast cancer — to the Google Science Fair and walked away with the grand prize. It was no wonder: Her invention, which uses a type of computer program called neural networks, can identify complex data patterns and make breast cancer detection calls with 99 percent accuracy. But she’s not stopping there: Brittany hopes to help wipe out cancer completely.
Since she took home the gold two years ago, she’s been named one of Time’s 30 Under 30, given a truly inspiring TED Talk, and launched her app, Cloud4Cancer, which allows doctors to enter their own data and fuel continued cancer research. And did we mention she’s also holding down a full course load at Duke University? Um, yeah.
We recently chatted with Brittany about how she got started, her challenges along the way, and how she balances being a college student with breaking the barriers of cancer diagnostics.
How did you get into computer programming?
When I was in 7th grade I took an elective class on futuristic thinking. When we were assigned our final paper, I decided to write mine on technology of the future. The moment I started researching artificial intelligence and its transcendence into human knowledge, I was inspired. I went out and bought a coding textbook, and taught myself how to code. I remember one of the first projects that I ever worked on was an artificial neural network that taught people how to play soccer.
You’re a self-taught coder who went on to create a potentially game-changing cancer detection tool. How did that happen?
Well, it definitely didn’t happen overnight. I spent over five years working with neural networks, starting with an entire year of research to try and recognize patterns and connect breast cancer to artificial intelligence. I faced a lot of roadblocks along the way, as this was a very complicated program with no predefined solution. I went through thousands of pages of coding and data that was available through public domains, and performed over 7.6 million test trials. I two failed projects before finally succeeding on my third attempt, taking what didn’t work the …
Very nice appearance: beveled doors, and the clean, semi-gloss white brightens up my kitchen. The cabinet is sturdy, and roomier than I thought it would be. Although I didn’t find it necessary, I liked that the materials are already included in case the purchaser wishes to anchor the cabinet to the wall against which it will stand.

The local police in Ferguson, Missouri have used questionable tactics to quell riots in the wake of a cop shooting a black unarmed 18-year-old, from arresting journalists to using tear gas on peaceful protesters to bringing barking police dogs into the streets.
Using dogs on a crowd in a civil disturbance has been a no-no in policing since Selma, Alabama, former police chief Chuck Drago told Business Insider, referring to bloody civil rights protests in 1965. It doesn’t look good. It’s a PR nightmare if nothing else, and it just stirs people up.
Tensions between Ferguson cops and Ferguson residents actually started long the shooting death last weekend of Michael Brown days before he was supposed to start college. The city is 67% black, but only three out of 53 police officers in the city are African-American, The New York Times notes. There’s evidence of racial profiling in the city, as The Times notes that blacks account for 87% of traffic stops in Ferguson.
It started years before this … The shooting is just the spark that ignites it, said Drago, who served as a senior law enforcement adviser to former Florida governor Charlie Crist after his retirement from the police force.
But even since the shooting, the police department appears to have made a bad situation worse.
The public has questioned the police’s versions of the shooting. While police say Brown assaulted the officer who shot him, an eye witness said Brown was shot in the back and repeatedly said he didn’t have a gun.
The lack of transparency in the investigation has also added to the mistrust residents feel towards their police officers, as police have refused to name the officer who shot Brown.
When the police department tightens and batters down the hatches, [it] makes things so much worse, Drago said, adding that it should not be a surprise when such a tense community rises up.
“It’s a textbook example of how not to handle the situation,” St. Louis City Councilman Antonio French told The New York Times, referring to the general police response in the aftermath of the shooting. “Ferguson has a white government and a white mayor but a large black population. This situation has brought out whatever rifts were between that minority community and the Ferguson government.”
Cops have also given the impression they’re trying to hush things up by tear gassing a TV crew and arresting journalists for the Washington Post and the Huffington Post.

this closet came with 3 shelves that fit snugly into the storage cabinet. the cabinet is sturdy but shelves keep it from being a cabinet to store brooms. If it came withOUT shelves, it would have completely met my expectations. I will purchase another cabinet and use it without the shelves.

The company is now showing users tweets from accounts they don’t follow. That’s a bigger deal than it seems.
When will Twitter no longer be Twitter?
This week, the company tested a change to its core product that could alter the service in a small but important way. According to Mashable, Twitter is altering the timeline of a small number of users, so that they see tweets from accounts they don’t follow.
Right now, users only see tweets for three reasons: They’re from an account that user follows; they were retweeted by an account that user follows; or they’re an ad. Now, a user might see tweets from an account that someone whom they follow follows, or a tweet that someone they follow favorited.
I can independently confirm this news because I am one of the users they’re testing on. Earlier this week, I was flicking through my Twitter timeline and found something odd: a tweet from a user I’d never seen before. A small line of text above the tweet informed me that it was there because a friend of mine favorited it.
This new feature seems a big deal, because it alters the central conceit of Twitter. Right now, users only only see tweets from users you follow. This is seemingly the feature that made Twitter Twitter. As Mashable found, users already appear annoyed to be seeing tweets of ambiguous origin.
WTF @twitter, why am I seeing tweets from accounts that I don’t follow but are followed by someone whom I follow?— aleefbaypay (@aleefbaypay) August 3, 2014
But users already see tweets from users they don’t follow. These tweets are ads. Twitter already accepts money to show users tweets from brands and personalities that they don’t follow, and while this method of display-ads-for-Twitter may frustrate users, but it’s the path the company has chosen.
No, this feature strikes me as a big deal because it breaks something that may seem less pressing: the fave. As The Atlantic has previously documented, users hit the fave button for many reasons. A fave can mean “I agree,” “This made me laugh,” or “good chat.” Often, the only two users aware of a fave are the faver and the favee.
There have long been ways to see other user’s faves. The Discover tab in the company’s official mobile app, for instance, lists all the faves a certain user has made that day. But by and large, other people’s faves didn’t just pop up on your screen.
By transforming what a fave does, this feature fundamentally changes what a fave is. Users will have to adjust, and that process will exact communal cos …

My kitchen is rather small so I use as a place to store leftover containers, oven mitts, baking dishes hand towels and cat food. This was the only site to have many sizes to pick from. Was easy to assemble too. I added 2 shelves ( could be an option). Received in 4 days.
