After interviewing experts, surveying readers, and researching what makes a great broom, dust mop, and dustpan, we scoured retailers and manufacturer’s websites and compiled spreadsheets of 95 brooms, 50 dust mops, and 70 dustpans. We also visited physical stores to find out which brooms are widely available from different retailers.
I have sold flooring for more than 15 years and I would never advise using vinegar on wood, vinyl or laminate. It is an acid and will eventually destroy the finish. Additionally, steam cleaners should never be used on wood or laminate floors. Laminate floor joints are especially sensitive to water and the steam will eventually weaken the impregnated resins that protect the joints.

Hang baskets on the backs of doors for gardening gloves and smaller tools. Long-handled tools are best stored on a wall-mounted tool hanger. Use magnetic bars to quickly hang and organise metal gardening tools, or use pegboard to customise storage and change on the fly. Install overhead storage racks or pulley systems on the ceiling to haul things out of the way.
Our pick feels sturdy and well-made; nothing rattles or moves around during normal cleaning or with violent shaking. Some brooms felt cheap, and they creaked and clattered when shook. Many brooms have screw-on heads, and some came loose when sweeping or shaking debris out of the broom. The Casabella’s head screws on and off via plastic threads, but does not wiggle or come loose unless you’re trying to unscrew it.
The only thing the instructions don’t tell you is that the horizontal boards can only fit one way, which isn’t super obvious until you spend 15 minutes struggling to install them the wrong way like I did, so try rotating them if it seems difficult to fit them into the pegs.
Easy shop project for home or school : build a garden tools shelf to organize your tool shed, garage or basement. Watch how I turn a couple of salvage boards and some screws into a handy storage rack perfect for hanging large/long gardening tools out of the way.
Let me start out by saying I love this product – it was easy to install, I was able to hang everything including shears, and it looks good too! Its constructed of hard plastic, but appears to be durable; the hangers are angled and deep enough to store two items on each hanger. Here are few tips for installation:
How: Choose from ready-made wall storage systems, like the one shown here, which can be customized with shelving, baskets and other features. Or craft a DIY version using basic pegboard from the hardware store and outfit it with hooks and baskets.
After a year of using our broom pick, we’ve found it has held up well, though it’s necessary to clean it out more regularly in the tub the older it gets. The ends have frayed a teensy bit more, so they tend to grab onto pet hair more than they did when the broom was new. It’s not really a problem, since the broom still cleans pet hair and dust as well as the day we got it.
Call it tool storage on the go. This tool-holding unit comes with wheels, so you can put it to use in the garden before returning it to the garage or shed. It also offers interchangeable shelves and bin.
Why: If you have the space, a tall cabinet with a partition in the center is a great way to store a lot while keeping everything in its place — vacuums and sweepers on one side, cleaning products on the other.
This cabinet is being used as a linen closet. I love it. It looks like a pricy piece, and it is super roomy. Easy to assemble as well. Only down side is that since it is a more economical cabinet, it does scratch easy. you just need to be really careful with it. Other than that it’s perfect!

Snow may be covering your yard, or rain may be keeping you inside, but you can still get a jump on starting your summer garden by deciding what you want to grow and, possibly more important, where in your yard you want to grow it. Winter or early spring is also a good time to map out a garden design and figure out your timeline for preparing the garden beds and doing the all-important planting.

A brief bit from sunday morning Children’s BBC in about 1995. Coming out of incredible games which was a ‘celebrity special’ featuring Roland Rivron, Keith Chegwin and Phillipa Forrester into Phill…
At 3.55pm on 9 September 1985, Phillip Schofield presented the first slot for the all-new ‘Children’s BBC’. His introductions to the programmes came from a tiny control desk, dubbed the ‘Broom Cupboard’. Stars including Andy Crane, Andi Peters and Zoe Ball later made the Broom Cupboard their home. Not to forget scene-stealers Gordon the Gopher and Edd the Duck.
We eliminated nine of our test brooms because they were either poorly designed or just plain bad at sweeping. We had a panel of four regular, non-professional sweepers use the five finalists to sweep up flour, litter, and rice at the Wirecutter office in Manhattan’s Chinatown. I also used each of the finalists for several weeks to clean my Brooklyn apartment. I did a weekly sweep in every room—which includes hardwood flooring and a bathroom with small tiles and lots of grout—and daily spot cleanings by the litter box and scratching board because my two cats love to make messes.
The Great Children’s BBC Memorabilia Giveaway took place in September 1989. This was a write-in competition in which viewers had to correctly guess the number of programmes featured in a new season trail which had been run in the week or so preceeding the launch of the new look. Those with the right answer were picked at random to receive miscellaneous items which were no longer needed, such as Edd’s old jumpers, the old Children’s BBC sign from the wall, and Wilson’s beloved picture of Mrs Mangel from Neighbours.
Organize all your yard tools with the monkey bar large yard tool Only 4 screws into 2 studs 48 apart, and you’re finished. This rack does not limit you on the size of yard tools; you can hang a wheel barrow, shovels, rakes, weed eaters, leaf blowers, and hedge clippers.
Inclement weather almost put paid to Children’s BBC TWO’s planned outside broadcast from the Clothes Show Live exhibition, at Birmingham’s NEC, one Sunday morning towards the end of 1990. Heavy snow had fallen, effectively cutting off the venue from the outside world. But with assistance from the RAF, presenters Andi Peters and Philippa Forrester made it to Birmingham and the outside broadcast made it to air – but not before Simon Parkin had been rushed into the BBC2 Broom Cupboard, bedecked with a random selection of clothes, as a contingency.
