If there is one other measure required for the London housing market, it is to clamp down on owners of vacant properties, or those that are used only a couple of weeks a year. But it isn’t the broom cupboards which languish empty: it is the mansions and cavernous penthouses into each of which you could squeeze a couple of dozen pied-a-terres. That would also mean a couple of dozen fewer people crammed into the Tube every morning, taking pressure off the transport system.

A new presenter joined Children’s BBC to link the morning schedule. His name was Andy Crane, a former DJ at Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. He spent almost four years with Children’s BBC and in that time sported a variety of hairstyles, most of which can be seen on this website!

This mop is big – about 18 long x 7 wide. So it does floors quickly. Used it on wood and tile. Label said it can even be used on stone, and is good for pet hair. It picks up the dirt and dust easily. It has a release button you press with your foot to take the pad off and wash it. It has a twist…  see moreof Terry’s review

If the Casabella broom is unavailable or you don’t want to buy a separate dustpan, you should get the $14 Libman Large Precision Angle Broom with Dustpan instead. Its synthetic bristles are stiffer, thicker, and sparser than the Casabella’s, so it’s not as effective at sweeping, and the Libman doesn’t have a comfy grip like our pick. But it’s a few inches taller than the Casabella, has a wider sweeping surface, and a more severe head angle that’s better at reaching deep into corners. Plus, it comes with a (not so great) dustpan.

The $22 Bona Microfiber Floor Mop has an extendable handle like the Simplee Cleen, but it also has the same built-in Velcro that prevents us from recommending the Simplee Cleen. None of the Bona’s cloths were as good at cleaning as our pick, and removing the cloth from the Velcro teeth resulted in a massive dust plume in the air and all down my front. The Simplee Cleen had the same problem, but to a lesser degree.

Suncast vertical sheds can handle everything from garden rakes to golf clubs. And they fit just about anywhere you need a little extra storage in the garage, next to the house, or in your yard. Like all Suncast products, these vertical sheds are built for durability, designed to protect your stuff from weather, and look good doing it.

We eliminated 12 dust mop heads that failed our flour test or didn’t hold up well in the wash. We tested each of the three finalists again with sifted flour and washed them one more time before long-term testing them all for several months in an apartment with two cats. The long-term tests revealed which dust mop could go the longest between cleanings, which could hold the most dust overall, and which ones held up best over multiple washings.

I figure it’s worth noting that Walmart also has flat brushes (with flagged bristles) which seem to pair decently with the OXO Dust Pan. The one I have is all black and seems as though it’s meant more for garages/work benches than for “around the house” duty, but it seems like it could work just as well in either capacity. It has an ergonomic handle, so it’s not a perfect fit to the dust-pan, handle-wise, and not *all* of the bristles fit perfectly into the pan when brush and pan are stored together, but it works well enough that I’ve stopped storing the dust pan on the broom and instead store it with the bench brush since I always use them together. (I’m part of that 40% camp that prefers to use a dustpan+brush combo to grab the dust piles produced by the broom — using the broom+dustpan to do the job just doesn’t seem to be as accurate/thorough/wieldy.)

Our pick is wide angle, but most brooms are of a similar size so if you’re having issues with larger areas you might want to look into something like the dual-action dustmop we recommend above. Hope this helps!

The broom cupboard ban is an indication of just how far we are from solving the national housing crisis. We have published standards covering everything from space to energy consumption, but few measures to ensure that sufficient homes get built. The government has adopted the approach of Nye Bevan, who insisted on high-spec council housing on plots large enough for the occupants to grow vegetables, so as to avoid creating what he called the ‘slums of tomorrow’. His insistence on those standards increased costs and land-take, slowing down the Attlee government’s housing programme. Housebuilding actually fell in 1949, failing to pick up again until 1952 when the Conservatives returned to power.

The first ever Comic Relief night was stagedin February 1988 and Children’s BBC viewers were charged with voting for the celebrity they’d most like to see plunged into the horrific sounding gunk tank. The voting arrangements were very informal (viewers just had to write in), and Andy gave regular updates on how the scores were looking. He was very vocal in encouraging viewers to vote for Grange Hill’s Mr Bronson – only to find the erudite disciplinarian standing menacingly beside him immediately after one impassioned plea. Actor Michael Sheard stayed in character for the whole link, with Andy playing the nervous schoolboy.

Phillip was immediately popular and his obvious enthusiasm for the job was genuine. He would stay up half the night personally answering viewer’s letters. But when multiple sacks of mail started to arrive each day – a good indication of how well the viewers were taking to the new look – secretarial assistance was brought in!
