Short handles are best for restricted work areas, but they require more leg strength. Depending on your height, you may be doing a lot of bending. Short handles are often thicker and may have a grip on the handle, making them heavier than a longer tool.

When selecting brooms to test, I looked at articles by broom manufacturers, reviews by users on Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowe’s. I came up with a list of top-rated brooms and eliminated models that cost more than $35 (with one exception), models with plastic handles that users said were likely to break, push broom models with handles that could not be replaced, and models with fewer than five reviews of their performance. I also eliminated brooms that had only flagged fibers. I ended up testing a total of four corn brooms and ten push brooms.

Where there’s life, there’s dust! Household dust is an airborne mix of soil particles, lint, insect parts, animal dander, pollen, molds and fungi. Dust comes in through the open window or door, or hitches a ride inside on shoes and clothing. It is stirred into the air by walking or careless dusting. Airborne dust irritates breathing passages and triggers allergic reactions in sensitive people. As it falls, it settles on fixtures, surfaces and floors, and clogs furnace filters and refrigerator coils, causing these appliances to work harder and consume more energy. Because dust is abrasive, walking on dusty floors can damage carpet, vinyl, or hardwood floors.

The $10 OXO Good Grips Dustpan and Brush Set is a whisk-style brush set with very soft bristles that fling particles. The dustpan is similar to our pick, with that excellent contoured lip—but it is narrower and lacks the comfortable handle, and it’s paired with a terrible brush that isn’t worth the extra $4. According to our survey, most people don’t want a whisk brush, and this set wasn’t good enough to change our minds.

After that, we applied the criteria to narrow the hundreds of sweeping products into the three dozen we called in for testing, which we’ve outlined below. After using the tools at home for six months, and getting more opinions from friends and Wirecutter colleagues, we’ve gotten more intimate with brooms than you’d think was possible. Now I can identify the make and model of any broom I see on the street or TV—a new talent I hope to never lose.

Lift the and let excess water drip off. Once you’ve given it plenty of time to soak, lift your mop and hold it above the bucket. Mops often absorb way more water than they need, so hold your mop up for 2 to 3 seconds to let excess liquid fall back into the bucket.[5]

“Most dustpans have an edge-to-edge ridge, but our pick’s ridge tapers near the sides of the large polypropylene body to make it easier to empty the dustpan into the trash. This design foiled our original water capacity test—the liquid flowed out the sides—but solid debris was no problem.”

These come in three basic types: push, synthetic and corn. Push brooms are made from synthetic bristles arrayed in a wide flat base. They’re used to sweep large areas like the center of indoor rooms, garages, and patios. Rougher bristles allow the push broom to tackle irregular surfaces. Choose a push broom with tacked-in bristles, avoiding brooms that are merely glued together. Look for a metal coupling between the handle and the head; the stresses of sweeping will wear out plastic fittings quickly.

Brooms also offer a level of deft control not afforded by most electrical cleaning implements. You can use a broom to sweep even the most delicate silk upholstery or hand knotted carpet, for example, applying only the amount of pressure you deem necessary. A broom can also generate immense force, scrubbing away at concrete or brick as you lean into the handle.

The best part about the Oxo Good Grips Sweep Set is its extendable broom, which adjusts for comfortable use by people of all heights. The second-best thing is the fact that the dustpan features dirt-grabbing teeth to keep the brush clean until the job is done.

If you need more storage space, you can easily place more hooks behind the tool rack. This garden tool organizer is made out of powder-coated steel, is equipped with rubber-coated hooks, and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Push brooms have rectangular heads with bristles attached in rows. The bristles may be glued in, which means that the bristles will eventually fall out when the glue fails, or they may be tacked in with metal staples, which leave you at the mercy of the tack-tician. For example, three bundles of tacked-in bristles on the Garrett Wade Angled-Bristle Outdoor Patio Broom (no longer available) fell out in 15 minutes of use, making up about 10% of the brooms bristles. A broom that increases the amount of debris on your floor is definitely not doing its job.

I purchased this broom last year while dog sitting my son’s bulldog. It’s amazing how it sweeps up every bit of dust and dog hair from my ceramic tiled floors. The adjustable handle works for me because I’m short. I also love the fact its rubber bristles are washable and effective. I recently purchased 3 more for my children who own dogs that shed. They will receive them as gifts for Christmas and if they don’t love them, I will be surprised.

What really helped was when I learned that you can slide the grip further up the shaft to a more natural gripping position. It’s still a little shorter than I’d find ideal, so my hands are a bit close together for super efficient sweeping, but it hasn’t proved to be a major problem.

The O-Cedar Dual-Action Flip Mop and refills are available from most retailers, and they’re easy to find online, too. Our pick costs $19, and refills are $10 each from Amazon, but we found our pick for $13—and its refills for $7 to $8—in Target, Home Depot, and Walmart. The O-Cedar and its refills are less expensive and much more effective than other dust mops we tested.
