A better question would be – what CAN’T it clean. Feel free to leave a comment below to ask about specific messes, but in general, there is not very many things that you will want to clean off your kitchen floor that this broom can’t handle. Shedding pet hair, food crumbs, thick gooey spills, sand, dust, mud, you name it. Anything regular will be swept up faster and easier than you can with a traditional broom, and all of the stuff that normally takes a vacuum, mop, your hands or way too much effort will also be cleaned with ease. You can even get it wet and add soap to use it as a scrub brush to remove stubborn stains that your mop is unable to remove.
Oxo makes our list with a highly practical broom designed to deliver top-notch performance in any conditions. It is very ergonomic as well and can easily be maneuvered into places that are hard to reach, including far-reaching ceiling corners. The handle is soft and comfortable to grip whereas the all-angle functionality of this broom makes it one of the best choices out there at this point in time.

If you want a dustpan that comes with a brush, we recommend the Up & Up Dustpan Set from Target. No panel members preferred the Up & Up set to the OXO Good Grips Clip-On dustpan—which is better at cleaning and more comfortable—but they unanimously agreed it’s the best dustpan-and-brush set we tested. It’s also the least expensive.
It may look like a small push broom, but you will get the best results if you pull it towards you like a traditional one. On most occasions, you will simply sweep like normal, and the Sweepa will do the rest. As stated above, each time you pull the broom towards you, a strong static charge is built up. This basically pulls the dirt and hair along with the broom, and also prevents it from flying away. The solid wall of rubber that is formed by the flexible bristles as you sweep will completely remove anything in it’s path. Once you are done sweeping, just give the broom a couple of taps on the floor to release the charge, allowing you to move the debris into a dust pan, or other receptacle.
I don’t think I’ve got a dust pan, but I do understand its purpose. But brooms … I guess they might be useful if you’ve got a terrace or a front porch or something similarly half-outdoors. Otherwise, this feels like a test of carriages in the era of Tesla cars. What can I do with a broom that I can’t do with a modern vacuum? They are just moving dirt around, a vacuum seems infinitely more useful to me.
Although most people never consider this broom for hardwood, this is much better than the traditional broom. Its pliable rubber bristles form a barrier, so if it is being pulled all along the floor, all of the dust and dirt and even hair are being removed. This is because the bristles are also static charged, like the Swiffer, keeping all debris on the broom itself, and not spreading it as the broom is pushed and pulled. Rubber brooms are considered one of the best brooms for hardwood floors by cleaning professionals and will greatly extend the life of laminate or true hardwood flooring.
I just got the recommended dust mop and took it for a spin — works great so far! But now it’s all full of dust and such, of course, and I’m not quite sure what to do with it. I’ve been a Swiffer user, and this is the point where I’d throw away the cloth and put a new one on. Do I throw the mop cover in the washer after just one use? With all the dusty stuff? Or pick off the dust bunnies, shake it out, etc.?
Although most of you would agree that you shouldn’t necessarily spend an awful lot of time searching for a new broom, you should at least take the time to see what the market has in store before making a purchase.
Matt Hamilton, the American curler, said he discovered that he was able to generate greater force by holding the broom more upright. Kennedy, the Canadian curler, said he learned that pressure was more important than stroke rate. So now he sacrifices speed for the sake of power.

The $15 Rubbermaid Flexible Sweeper has an effective cover, but that cloth is too big for the frame. During cleaning it feels like it’s going to fall off. The frame is hollow in the middle, so it doesn’t press the cloth evenly into the floor. Finally, the handle extension mechanism is bulky and makes the Rubbermaid difficult to grip.
Amélie has recently come to Netflix, and inspired by a plane viewing of The Shape of Water (really, just a merman Amélie!), I decided to rewatch the older film for the first time in years. With the first lilting note of the accordion, it all came rushing back: how I did up my college bedroom in a palette of reds and greens and thought Mathieu Kassovitz was the most attractive actor in the world, and even wondered if I could pull off a pointelle sweater. Some things change, of course, but there’s one legacy of that bit of post-9/11 escapism that has stayed with me into adulthood.
I’ll pass your comments along to our editorial team so they know there’s interest in seeing wet mops reviewed. I too would like to see this. I don’t think I’ve ever had a wet mop that felt easy to use.
Honestly, the Quickie 00528 18-Inch Bulldozer Push Broom Indoor/Outdoor ($14 + $10 shipping) came close to being our top pick. It feels light, but it’s stiff and sturdy enough to push trapped leaves and piles of heavy sand with ease—without leaving huge streaks or lines of sand on the smooth concrete floor. Its combination of stiff, coarse inner fibers and finer outer fibers make it easy to move large debris and dust. In fact, it was the best overall performer in our tests, beating out all other synthetic-bristle brooms at moving a variety of materials. This was the only push broom that managed to move both pine needles and their dust from the driveway in one sweep. It was as capable as the others in moving leaves on and off a deck, and it handled sand on a concrete floor as well as all the other synthetic brooms.
Over the past six months, we spent 125 hours researching 215 brooms, dustpans, and dust mops, and testing 36 of them firsthand. We interviewed cleaning experts, surveyed hundreds of readers, worked with a panel of testers to clean two New York City spaces all winter, and even literally counted the bristles of some of the best brooms we found. After narrowing our search down to 14 brooms (half of which have dustpans), 12 dust mops, 15 different dust mop heads, and 10 dustpans (eight of which have brushes), we’ve found the best sweeping tools you can buy.
Each Wonder® Mop has microfiber GRIPSTRIPS™ that lift up to 20% more dirt leaving your floors cleaner. The Wonder® Mop works great on all surfaces and can be machine washed up to 50 times.
Our pick is wide angle, but most brooms are of a similar size so if you’re having issues with larger areas you might want to look into something like the dual-action dustmop we recommend above. Hope this helps!
Used many of the items on this list. They ALL fail in under a year. They are cheap consumer crap (in my opinion). Buy a real corn broom with a wood handle (Rubbermaid makes them). They last for years, do a good job, last for years, are a joy to use, last for years. For fine dust/power purchase a horsehair/natural bristle broom. They last MUST longer than poly brooms and are a pleasure to own.

Our pick’s shorter-than-average bristles are crucial in creating a balance between soft, flexible bristles and a firm, effective sweep, but that length makes it difficult to get into deep crevices or far under furniture. The short bristles also make it easier to hit the plastic frame on things like low kitchen cabinets, although that didn’t often occur in our long-term testing. This isn’t a dealbreaker, because our pick’s overall performance far outshines its weakness in tight crevices—and hopefully you can move furniture to thoroughly sweep underneath it.

To learn what makes a good broom, dust mop, and dustpan, we interviewed Debra Johnson, a home-cleaning expert who has worked with Merry Maids since 1997. In addition to her firsthand cleaning expertise, she works with the Merry Maids Franchise Cleaning Council to research and improve the cleaning equipment the company uses. We also talked to Green Cleaning Coach Leslie Reichert, a housekeeping expert who teaches how to clean effectively and in environmentally friendly ways. Then, we surveyed hundreds of Wirecutter readers to find out what they love (and hate) about their own brooms.
