After interviewing experts, surveying readers, and researching what makes a great broom, dust mop, and dustpan, we scoured retailers and manufacturer’s websites and compiled spreadsheets of 95 brooms, 50 dust mops, and 70 dustpans. We also visited physical stores to find out which brooms are widely available from different retailers.

I found that a broom’s performance isn’t related to its price, or even its brand. The Garrett Wade Heavy Duty Garden and Garage Broom was a top performer among corn brooms, while the Garrett Wade Angled Bristle Outdoor Patio Broom crumbled almost as soon as a tester touched it, losing three bundles of bristles in 15 minutes. The $14 Quickie Bulldozer performed better than the $45 Weiler Palmyra Fiber Garage Brush. A broom that cost less than $20 performed better than a $45 model, and one of our top picks is sold by the same firm that offers a broom that shed bundles of bristles as soon as it touched the ground.

It works pretty well on pet fur on my round throw rug but it would work better if the straight edge side wasn’t so flexible . It takes a good deal of effort to get the fur up when you are a 70 year old woman

Keep your bulky ladder out of the way yet easy to access. Suited to 150-pound ladders of any length, the Racor Ladder Lift relies on a fixed ceiling-mounted hook and rope and pulley system that does all the heavy lifting — and makes a ladder feel surprisingly light. The unique locking mechanism holds the rope securely to avoid accidental release. Photo courtesy of Racor

The natural coloring of the bristles complements the wood handle and gives it a traditional look that will definitely grow on you over time. If you’re looking for a no-nonsense broom which gets the job done efficiently, look no further than this one.

The regular straw brooms work best on the decks and cement and on unfinished wood floors. But for me the good thick black nylon angled ones work best on the finished hard wood interior floors. Maybe it would be best to try some different ones on different surfaces and see what works best for you. If you find one that you really love using pease let me know because I haven’t had that experience. Tache

Long as it has taken to tell the battle, beginning with the slaying of the Persian cat to the thrusting of the mop into Michael’s jaws, so swift had been the rush of events that the passengers, springing from their deck-chairs and hurrying to the scene, were just arriving when Michael eluded the mop of the sailor by a successful dodge and plunged in on Captain Duncan, this time sinking his teeth so savagely into a rotund calf as to cause its owner to splutter an incoherent curse and howl of wrathful surprise.

Mop no more than once a week. If your floors get particularly dirty thanks to children, pets, or lots of foot traffic, you may need to mop them every week. However, for most houses, try to mop your hardwood floors around twice a month.[1]

I have dogs, lots of dogs. This broom is great for sweeping up their hair and scrubbing dog kennels. My friend recently got a border collie and was complaining about all of the hair in the house. I bought her one of these brooms and she loves it.

Came here looking for a mop rec because my current mop head broke after only a year, and, uh oh, you recommend the crappy one I am looking replace. It shouldn’t be that surprising that it broke considering the highest stress point (where the handle screws in) is made of fairly flimsy plastic. I’m looking to buy products that will last for the long haul and not end up in the landfill after a year or two and am willing to spend more to accomplish that. Curious if you guys came across any mop heads without plastic components.

If you want to quickly do your sweeping, going for an alternative that has a comfortable handle is the way to go. Comfort is important not only because it can make you finish your task faster, but also because it can help you view the task less as a chore, and more as a relaxing activity.

I just installed my second one of these units, they work great. I did have one hook that was defective this time, called the company, got a person who transferred me to Shaun where I got voicemail, grr. I hung up, but before I could put the phone down Shaun called me back (caller ID), quickly understood the problem and sent me a new hook, no problem. Given that they come with more than enough hooks it wasn’t a big issue but the service was awesome. I am now scanning my garage trying to figure where I can fit another one…

The biggest flaw is a complaint you see popping up in roughly 10 percent of the Amazon reviews (and a few at Home Depot, too): the 60” steel handle snaps off at the head. That may be because the screw-end of the handle isn’t made of steel; it’s plastic—a lighter plastic than the “resin” plastic head. This particular break makes it difficult to replace the handle because you can’t unscrew the portion of the handle that’s still stuck in the broom head. You could probably use pliers to twist it out, as Wirecutter editor Harry Sawyers suggested to me, but you really shouldn’t have to do that to a broom, even if it is cheap. The steel handle has plastic threads, and you could potentially replace this handle with a new one that uses metal threads, and still come out at a lower price than the O’Cedar. Or you could get lucky and buy one that doesn’t unexpectedly break.

This angled broom from Black & Decker not only makes our list of best brooms but also scores top marks in almost every aspect. The design of this broom is extremely ergonomic and convenient and lets you reach into the tightest and smallest of places. The bristles and the handle both are exceptionally well-made and provide very efficient cleaning. The handle also has a rubber bumper in the middle which makes it very easy to grip and move around. This broom is ideal for all sorts of settings, be it your home, office or outdoors.

Brooms are available in the market of all types, configuration, and sizes. It helps to fulfill all the challenges for sweeping. They are made up of various bristles such as natural fibers such as straw or corn. Many people consider the plastic fibers because they can be cleaned easily and perfect for wet and dry surfaces.

Folks working at animal shelters LOVE this broom. It will definitely work when used as a push broom, but for certain applications, you’ll find that it works better when pulling. On a hard surface, it will easily clear fur and litter with a single pass, even when pushing. Try it out and you won’t be disappointed.

Even if you usually grab the vacuum when it’s time for some cleaning, it’s still worth it to have a broom and dustpan on hand as a backup or alternative. Not only can mechanical failure or a power outage curtail a cleaning machine’s ability to work as noted, but the loud noise of these devices can be a limiting factor as well. A broom’s sweep is all but silent, so you can do some cleaning even when others are sleeping, or when you yourself simply don’t want to hear a loud noise.

Cleaning Tip: Use your Wonder Mop to clean ceilings. I use mine regularly to clean mold and mildew from my bathroom ceiling. It is easy with the long handle. It is light weight, and wringing is a snap. No more messy hands or dry skin from bleach water.

Each Wonder® Mop has microfiber  GRIPSTRIPS™ that lift up to 20% more dirt leaving your floors cleaner. With the power wringer you will be able to remove more water from the microfiber mop head allowing your floors to dry faster so you can be back on them sooner. The Wonder® Mop works great on all surfaces and can be machine washed up to 50 times.

Our pick’s best feature is its contoured rubber lip. The red thermoplastic rubber lip is molded to the polypropylene underside of the dustpan, which makes the edge sit flush with the floor. Most dustpans, like the O-Cedar Anti-Static dustpan, have a flat or wedge-shaped piece of rubber attached to the edge of the dustpan. This type of lip acts as a slope but leaves a hollow space underneath for dirt to get trapped, so the dustpan must be scooted back and the pile re-swept. Several panel members noted the OXO took only one sweep to get an entire pile of cat litter from the floor to the dustpan.

Our pick is well-designed, great at sweeping, and comfortable to use. (It’s pretty cute too, not that anyone is buying a broom for its dashing good looks.) On top of all that, it’s the least expensive broom we tested—only $10, and that’s cheaper even than the other brooms that also lacked a dustpan. Our survey found that most people are willing to pay up to $20 for a great broom. The Casabella costs only half that, and it’s the best of the bunch.

There’s no universal answer to how long microfiber lasts—that depends on how well it’s cared for, how often it’s washed, how dirty it gets, and how well-made it to begin with. Manufacturers estimate their microfiber mop heads will survive anywhere from 100 to 500 washes. (How often you need to wash it will vary; once every two weeks worked for us.) Both experts say to pay careful attention to how well your dust mop cleans. When it stops picking up dust—or if it falls apart entirely—it’s time to buy a new cloth.
