2. There is no line or instructions for attaching the backing to the middle support shelf. But there should be. So, get a long straight edge, lay the cabinet frame down on its front side, position the backing correctly height-wise, push slightly off to one side and mark a center for the support shelf position on one side, then push other direction and mark a center line on the other side. Use the straight edge to connect the two center marks together to get the line for screw/nail placement. Reposition the backing to the correct location and start attaching with the nails (or screws if you’re like me).
By now it’s become clear that Scandinavians and Nordic nations do a lot of things better than other countries. They have the smallest gender gaps, among the highest test scores, and the lowest levels of inequality.

Now, they’re set to rub their transportation superiority in our faces.

Finland’s capital, Helsinki, is about to launch a program that could virtually eliminate car ownership and give its residents the ability to plot an on-demand commute from their phones.

It’s mostly the vision of Sonja Heikkilä, a 24-year-old Helsinki transportation engineer.

Her idea was to create a real-time marketplace for customers to choose among transport providers and piece together the fastest or cheapest way of getting where they need to go. The providers’ services would be distilled into an app through which a customer could plan a route.

In her master’s thesis, Heikkilä used the character of Taneli, a 34-year-old married father of four young children, to demonstrate how the whole thing works. Helsinki already has a dial-up bus service called Kutsuplus (Finnish for “call plus”), which for more than a year has been letting riders dial up a minibus on their phone, choose their route, and select whether they want their own private ride, according to Wired. Here’s what the Kutsuplus app looks like:

Heikkilä’s vision combines minibus shuttle service with city bicycles and ride-sharing to all but eliminate the need for cars:

[Taneli] usually bicycles with his own bike to a station, ascends a bus, and carries the bicycle with him in the bus or leaves his own bicycle at the station and continues the trip with a city bike.

In case the conditions are not satisfying for bicycling, Taneli finds a car or ride-sharing service with the help of a platform that he uses through the mobile phone. In addition, a daily demand responsive transport service, such as Kutsuplus, fetches [his son] and his classmates from preschool and conveys them [home], where they can continue spending the afternoon together.

One app would allow to plan the entire route, including all modes, she told Business Insider in an email. However, there would be several competing apps, as there would be several private companies running the mobility operator business.

Heikkilä said the idea came about because Helsinki is growing too fast for its current transportation options, with a population projected to increase 40% in the next 35 years.

As a result, many people are forced to own a car, but 95% of a car’s life is spent …

eBay determines trending price through a machine learned model of the product’s sale prices within the last 90 days. New refers to a brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item, and Used refers to an item that has been used previously.
Our household mop is lightweight, easy to use, and compact to store away for future use. It features special rubber grommets which allow the attachment of standard 16”x16” microfiber towels, if you are in a jam.
Use super-narrow spaces – Storage for all those essential mops, brooms and brushes does not need to be wide: a space as narrow as 20cm can be enough. Exploit forgotten corners, too. A narrow space down the side of a tall cupboard or fridge can become accessible and useful if you install pull-out storage, like this sliding set of hooks.
IBM thinks the future belongs to computers that mimic the human brain and use quantum physics…and they’re betting $3 billion on it.

IBM is unveiling a massive $3 billion research and development round on Wednesday, investing in weird, science fiction-like technologies–and, in the process, essentially staking Big Blue’s long-term survival on big data and cognitive computing.

Over the next five years, IBM will invest a significant amount of their total revenue in technologies like non-silicon computer chips, quantum computing research, and computers that mimic the human brain.

The $3 billion funding round will go towards a variety of projects designed to catapult semiconductor manufacturing past what IBM physical sciences director Supratik Guha calls the “end of silicon scaling” in microchips. Essentially, IBM believes there will be a point in the medium-term future where microchips will no longer be made out of silicon because other materials will allow for faster and more complex computation. In a telephone conversation, Guha told Fast Company that his company sees an end to silicon scaling within the next three to four tech generations.

The new R&D initiatives fall into two categories: Developing nanotech components for silicon chips for big data and cloud systems, and experimentation with “post-silicon” microchips. This will include research into quantum computers which don’t know binary code, neurosynaptic computers which mimic the behavior of living brains, carbon nanotubes, graphene tools and a variety of other technologies.

IBM’s investment is one of the largest for quantum computing to date; the company is one of the biggest researchers in the field, along with a Canadian company named D-Wave which is partnering with Google and NASA to develop quantum computer systems.

The news of the funding round is surprising to some IBM-watchers; for the past year or so, rumors flew that IBM was considering an exit from the microchip business. Barring an unlikely sharp turn by Big Blue in business strategy, the funding round is essentially a shift of strategy by IBM. While it looks likely that IBM will sell their chip unit–the New York Times cites GlobalFoundries as a likely buyer–the investment means that IBM sees a new way to make money from chips: Long-term returns from holding valuable, potentially lucrative pate …

I purchased the broom cabinet online and it was delivered to a Walmart near my home. The cabinet has some weight to it (70+ pounds), so if you are picking it up by yourself you may need some help. It will not fit into a compact car. It was very easy to assemble, which I did by myself within an hour. However, a helping hand to hold the pieces in place would not hurt. I am able to fit a bucket, mop, and broom in the cabinet. I wish it was a little bit bigger, but it serves its purpose for now. I would recommend this cabinet.

New research suggests skincare tailored to individuals’ DNA may be the best way to combat the appearance of ageing

Those who believe that beauty is only skin deep may need to think again. For the first time, scientists have gone right into our DNA to develop the most advanced anti-ageing serum ever created.

The new treatment, developed by one of Britain’s leading scientific innovators, is personally tailored to each individual and could revolutionise how women – and maybe even men – approach their daily skincare regime.

It relies on a new microchip that allows the product’s creators to analyse a person’s genetic code within just 30 minutes. Through this, they can discover how fast their body degrades collagen – the structural protein that keeps the skin plump and supple – and their level of antioxidants, which protect against damaging free radicals.

Using this information, they develop a personalised anti-ageing cream to deliver the right amount of collagen and antioxidants to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Clinical trials over 18 months have already suggested that the product, named Geneu (pronounced ‘gene you’), reduces fine lines and wrinkles by up to 30 per cent within just 12 weeks.

The skincare range was developed by Prof Chris Toumazou, Regius Professor at Imperial College, London, who invented the cochlear ear implant, which helped 10,000 deaf children to hear, the artificial pancreas for Type 1 diabetics and the wireless heart monitor.

The range is possible because of his latest invention, a handheld microchip device, which can sequence DNA in 30 minutes. He recently won European Inventor of the Year 2014 for the breakthrough.

Prof Toumazau hopes that by bringing the technology into the consumer arena, it will help the public get used to the idea of DNA checks which will ultimately benefit their health and encourage an era of personalised medicine.

“It’s not really skincare, it’s skin health,” he said. “The skin is the largest organ in the body.”

At Geneu’s New Bond Street clinic in central London, doctors take a cheek swab before isolating the DNA strands and injecting them into the microchip, which is then fed into a sequencing computer. In 30 minutes, the profile is ready and a serum can be created.

Dr Maria Karvela, one of the scientific advisers at Geneu, who administers the test said: “As soon as I heard about Chris and the microchip, I wanted to be part of it. It really is cutting-edge science.”

Most people degrade collagen at an average speed, but …

Some designs have hooks that spring up then lay flat when not in use to prevent catching. For those looking to decorate outdoors, companies like 3M make special adhesives that stand up to the elements, humidity and a wide temperature range. Large metallic hooks make a good wreath-hanging solution throughout the year. During the holiday season, outdoor light clips make it easy to secure Christmas lights instead of nailing or stringing them up.

Did you scroll all this way to get facts about hooks for hanging? Well you’re in luck, because here they come. There are 20890 hooks for hanging for sale on Etsy, and they cost $52.38 on average. The most common hooks for hanging material is wood. The most popular color? You guessed it: brown.
Apple’s mobile operating system is once again dominating Google’s operating system when it comes to online shopping.

Adobe, which is tracking online shopping, reports the following: iOS users drove four times as much mobile sales revenue as Android users, 79 and 21 percent respectively.

IBM’s data produced similar findings:

iOS vs. Android: iOS once again led the way in mobile shopping this holiday season, outpacing Android across three key metrics on Black Friday:

Average Order Value: iOS users averaged $121.86 per order compared to $98.07 for Android users, a difference 24.3 percent.•
Online Traffic:
iOS traffic accounted for 34.2 percent of total online traffic, more than double that of Android, which drove 15 percent of all online traffic.•
Online Sales:
iOS sales accounted for 21.9 percent of total online sales, nearly quadruple that of Android, which drove 5.8 percent of all online sales.

This is important for a few reasons.

For years, people have talked about Apple’s tiny market share when it comes to the phone market. Globally, Apple has 12% of the smartphone market, according to Gartner. Android has 82%. In the US, Apple has 42% of the market, and Android has 52%, according to comScore.

Market share is important because typically in tech, it’s winner-take-all. The more people you have using your platform, the better you will do.

In theory, the more people use Android, the more developers and publishers will tailor their websites and their apps to Android. In theory, Apple’s iPhone will be a second class citizen with second class apps. Eventually people will bail on the iPhone if it’s offering a second class experience.

But, in practice, Android’s market share advantage means nothing because iOS is more popular when it comes to usage, as demonstrated by these shopping data points. If you’re making an app or a website, you want it to work best on iOS because that is where the most lucrative customers are. So, in practice, Apple gets the best apps and the best web experience because that’s what makes sense for companies and developers.

You could argue that this isn’t indicative of usage, but merely demonstrates that iOS users have more money to burn. If that’s the case, it’s good for iOS, too. People with money to burn are an attractive cohort of users for developers and companies.

Google has long been a powerful force in the tech world, but investors and industry watchers alike are worried that the search engine giant’s strength today may turn to weakness …
It even aims to match riders with similar tendencies to blah blah blah.

Call it the 21st-century version of hitchhiking: BlaBlaCar is a peer-to-peer marketplace for open spots in cars across Europe. Unlike American ride-sharing apps Uber and Lyft, BlaBlaCar caps the price of the ride based on distance and the cost of fuel in that country. The average ride is 200 miles and the average fare is less than $25.

BlaBlaCar was born in 2006, when Stanford student Frederic Mazzella wanted to go from Paris to visit his family in the French countryside and couldn’t find a train—nor an easy way to share a car on Craigslist. (The name comes from rating yourself on your level of in-car chattiness from “Bla” to “BlaBlaBla.”)

Every month, a million people use the service, now operating in 12 countries, to share a car. “What we’re doing is building a massive transport network out of all of these empty seats in cars,” Nicolas Brusson, the COO of BlaBlaCar told Quartz. “There are more seats available between Berlin and Munich in cars, for example, than there are train seats or bus seats.”

BlaBlaCar’s fee model is structured to avoid a plague of the sharing economy: fights with established industries that don’t like being disrupted. Uber is the subject of protests from taxi unions all across Europe and has been banned in Seoul; Lyft struggles to get approved in New York; and Airbnb’s lawyers are fighting for their users who have been prosecuted for illegally running hotels. “We don’t want a driver to make a profit, because then you end up in regulatory issues,” Brusson says. “If you don’t make a profit, you don’t have to worry about a special license.”

Capping prices reduces the experience of ride-sharing to one of simple economics. While it’s compared to startups like Airbnb, what BlaBlaCar actually offers is a service focused around cost, which is makes it more akin to budget airlines like Ryanair or Spirit airlines. “We do a low-cost service for the 99 percent,” he says, “unlike say, an Uber, which is for the 1 to 2 percent.” And unlike Airbnb, which is courting business travelers, BlaBlaCar says it has no imminent plans to introduce premium options.

By using Facebook logins, the service is attempting to ensure safety. In order to attain reimbursement, the passengers must give the driver confirmation codes to ensure the trip was safely completed. It also has a “ladies only” op …
