For that same price, around $32, I can get about four years of life out of our reusable dust mop pick. Electricity and water prices vary, as does washer efficiency, but here’s how I calculated my costs: In New York City, a single warm load of laundry costs about 30 cents (7 cents for electricity, 5 cents for water, and 18 cents for our recommended detergent). Washing bi-weekly comes out to $7.80 per year. After four full years, my cost will be about $32, which is what the Swiffer refills totaled after just one year. Of course, I’ll have washed the reusable refill 100 times by then, and that means I’ll need to buy a $10 replacement, which brings my total to $42. If I use Swiffer sheets for the same period of time, I’d need about 624 sheets—that’s $130 total.

You might expect that the larger a broom’s surface area, the faster it will be at sweeping up messes. However, during our tests, we found that brooms with large heads tend to have stiff bristles that are less effective at sweeping up tiny specks. Our runner-up broom actually has a larger, 12.5-inch-wide head compared with the Casabella’s, which is 11 inches wide. Both heads are similar in thickness; our pick ranges from 1.5 to 2 inches thick and the Libman ranges from 1.25 to 2 inches thick. And yet the Casabella is the superior sweeper.
I have two of these and I like them a lot. I compared them to other tool hangers and I like this model better because it looks more sleek and less clunky. Some of the other models on the market have levers and a lot of plastic parts that I did not find particularly appealing.

The $18 O-Cedar Angler Angle Broom with Dust Pan is the best at sweeping cramped corners because of its sharp angle. It’s an effective sweeper and has the best bundled dustpan we tested. But its sharp angle and long, soft bristles fling piles of dust, so our panel eliminated it.

Rubbermaid, as well as a few other companies, make systems that you can hang on the wall to organize tools, garden supplies and other items in the garage. You just mount the system and use hooks to hang things up. This is a great way to make more floor space in the garage and keep it well-organized at the same time. Via: Flickr
Normally I’ll use a backpack vacuum on hard floors in the corridors. This method produces less dust flying in the air, picks up finer particles, and the time spent is comparable to dust mopping. In a larger space like a gym a wide dust mop is more productive. When finished dust mopping, I like to use my backpack vacuum to clean the pile of dirt and dust off of the floor and the dust mop itself. That way I’m not shaking out the dust into the air, and the mop needs less laundering, extending its life.

A further notable breakdown took place not long after Simon began to present the afternoon links. He had been joined in the Broom Cupboard by Andy Crane who, for the duration of the closing link, talked about the upcoming series of But First This (while wearing an assortment of BFT branded baseball caps) and solicited contributions from viewers. As the presenters said goodbye, the next schedule item – a trail – rewound on air and the presenters were hastily restored to the screen, with Andy rather taking charge of the situation – despite being in as a guest!
Wednesday 30 July 1986, and it’s Andy Crane’s third day on Children’s BBC. He’s on BBC2 for the first few weeks of the summer block, because of the Commonwealth Games on BBC1. This is the third lin…
So I decided enough was enough and that I wasn’t going to store my garden tools in a garbage pail anymore. I still had a couple of salvage boards left and I cut some triangle braces out of scraps. Then I measured and marked to fit the gussets.

My rack needed to hold 7 tools and the rack has 150mm spacings between the centres. By careful placement of the tools everything fits. See diagram for marking up. The centres were marked with a punch to aid drilling.
