Garage Tips: It is a good idea to snap-a-line on the foundation with a chalk-string as to where the outer face of the garage wall framing will sit. In the illustration we are using for a 12′ x 24′ garage, we are holding the walls back 1/2 from the foundations outer edge so that when we place the 1/2 structural sheathing on the walls it will be flush with the face of the foundation allowing the siding to sit down over the foundation face tightly. Keep this in mind when you drill your holes in the sole plates for the anchor-bolts.
Our local AHJ requires 5/8 FireX on the ceiling and the common wall (even though my wall has 8 of concrete in it). The aforementioned self-closing door with a 20 minute rating is also required. I went ahead and did FireX on all four walls, as the outer walls are studs, and it wasn’t much more money. I always thought the door was more about CO than smoke. I shouldn’t have used the term ‘fire rated’.
Before you can begin cleaning and organizing the garage, you have to sort what you have stored in there. Grab a lot of boxes and start organizing things by similarity. Once you know what you have and what you need to store, you can hang hooks, put up shelves to hold plastic bins and otherwise get everything perfectly organized. Buy a steam mop if you just want to clean floors. They’re best for hard floors, but some are useful for freshening up carpets and lifting stains, too. They’re generally cheaper than 2-in-1 steam mops, which can switch into a handheld mode for other tasks.
The other key difference is that cylinder steam cleaners take longer to get ready – normally a few minutes – but the advantages are longer running times and less filling up. Some can even be topped up as you clean, so you don’t have to turn off the cleaner to keep going.
This is a fun tip: Add texture when painting a wall by lightly dragging a whisk broom over the slightly cured paint. There are numerous sources online with directions on how to properly use this technique, such as How to Create a Fabric Finish from Behr®.

We installed pegboard over the sheetrock treatment. Its ok. It certainly has had an easily convertible nature over the last 20 years. Its an active shop area, has a sports car in residence and lots of garden and yard tools etc. If I have a complaint it would be that I should not have trimmed in the bottoms because its easier to blow out bugs with an air hose and tip fitting when you plan ahead but I did not think of it and had to redo the bottoms. Or I could have used channel board but that stuff is heavy.

No matter how you feel about it, you may be stuck with drywall in your garage depending on the design of your home and your local building codes. Drywall helps to increase the fire resistance of walls, which slows the spread of heat and flames to keep your family safe. Generally, garages attached to the home must have drywall installed on all walls adjacent to the home, as well as on the ceiling if there is any living space above the garage. Even separate garages located less than 3 feet away from the home must have drywall on all interior walls. Before skipping the drywall for an alternative product, check your local building codes to confirm whether drywall is required for fire resistance.
Cluttering is a major enemy when it comes to home organization. In most cases, brooms and mops will find themselves placed carelessly at the corner of a garage, closet, shed or other storage areas. Broom holders provide the best, old-fashioned and clever way to avoid the mess caused by brooms collecting in corners or sprawling across the floor. A broom holder is inexpensive and very easy to install.
With SmartSelect, you can easily set the ideal amount of steam for the surface. For other surfaces like stainless appliances, glass doors and backsplashes, you can switch from mop to hand-held cleaner in seconds.

“Okay, so I waited a couple of months to try this and then do a review. I have to say, this machine is awesome! I live in a fully tiled house in the desert with six big dogs. I clean about two times a week, and I’ve used this on the carpet in our house, too. The only problem is that I go through the solution you can buy from Bissell so fast. I decided to try the Mr. Clean concentrated cleaner, and I just put two drops into the whole bottle of water.”
I love the way you are using the PVC pipes. There are so many different ways to use different things instead throwing things away. And lets just get creative. I saw on 1 blog here the other they made shelf out of pipes. 1 thing I used to do back in the days was to ask construction companies to give me useful things, they were suppose to throw away. Just for saving the environment. If everyone would do that, the world would have a much better place you know. Thank you for sharing your creativity.

When it’s time to mow the lawn, trim the hedges, or plant a garden, don’t waste time searching for lawn equipment. Instead, design a well-organized storage spot in the garage to ensure your tools are easy to find and in good condition. Consider these savvy strategies based on your needs, budget, and available space.
A sturdy cabinet can be ideal for tucking tools, bags of soil, and other supplies out of sight. If you have children, choose a style with lockable doors to secure dangerous items, such as sharp tools, weed killer, and insecticide.
The IRC may not be the applicable code in your jurisdiction or it may have been amended so check with the local building official. For instance, in my state, if the dwelling is not sprinklered, the gypsum board on the garage side of the shared wall has been amended to be Type-X like in Mushcreek’s jurisdiction.
I am very big on reviews. I always try hard to read them before buying something that I think is of value…and even before visiting places (restaurants, salons, etc). However, I did not get a chance to read the reviews on this product because it was a spur of the moment purchase while I was already in the store. Lesson learned. Two months ago, I bought a cheaper $33 steam mop from the regular mops/swiffer/cleaning supplies section. It is the Quickie HomePro Steam Mop…which I prefer if you just need very basic cleaning. I was surprised at how easily it cleaned the floor. (I had just moved in and my kitchen tile floors were disgusting.) This mop worked wonders. HOWEVER, I went to clean under the floor cabinets and the mop hit the bottom of the cabinets and broke with ease. So of course I was upset that something could break so easily. It was almost like a cheap toy. Nevertheless…the half of the floor that I did clean was SPOTLESS. I figured if I paid a little bit more that I would alevite the cheap aspect and still have spotless floors. I went over to the actual vacuum section this time. MISTAKE! This mop literally did nothing. I could have scrubbed the floors with my hands and it a better job. I went over the floors 3 times…and once with Pine-Sol. Still nothing. I am shocked that it is even being advertised as such. Maybe it should be labeled as a fancier version of a swiffer wet jet…but even that does more than this. For those that appreciate these reviews as much as I do…this will definitely be going back tomorrow and I will NOT be purchasing anymore Shark products. *Oh and just for those wondering how dirty my kitchen floor was…I mean dirty as in…footprints from walking outside in the rain in sneakers and walking back in. That is NOT so dirty that this mop shouldn’t work. I hope this helps.

Although still quiet, the Shark Pro does makes more noise than the rest; it sounds something like a cat purring loudly. Unlike all the other finalists we tested, this one requires a Phillip head screwdriver to put together, but you only need to screw together the handle and the water tank.

This versatile system features grooved panels that attach to walls and organize various types of accessories, including hooks, shelves, baskets, and brackets. A slatwall system tends to be more affordable than cabinetry and features a narrower depth, says Chris McKenry, owner of Get It Together LA and member of the National Association of Professional Organizers. “If you don’t want to take up the whole wall, you can also simply add small strips of slat wall with adjustable hooks,” he says.

We used 3-1/2-in.-wide strips of 3/4-in. plywood for the strips because plywood is always straight and never splits—but pine 1x4s also work. Birch plywood was our choice for the strips and shelves, but you can also use less expensive BC plywood. You can rip 12 strips from one 4 x 8-ft. sheet—that’s enough for an average wall. We used four sheets of plywood for our system. For shelf edging, we used 1-1/2-in.-wide strips of solid birch (Photo 6). The total cost for our 20-ft.-long system was about $500, but you could cut that cost in half by skipping the fold-down workbench (Photo 5) and using less-expensive wood and plywood.

Even separate garages situated less than 3 feet far from the residence must have drywall on all interior wall surfaces. Before skipping the drywall for a different item, inspect your neighborhood building ordinance to validate whether drywall is needed for fire resistance.
