You might expect a steam mop to be more convenient than a squeeze mop, and you might expect the steam to loosen dried food spills effectively—and even sanitize floors. But not all of these expectations matched the reality when we last tested these products.

So will the shared wall and any wall that that supports the floor above. Since one wall with be mostly overhead doors, there is probably only one wall left that might or might not have to be protected with drywall.

GarageTek’s patented TekPanel is the core of the entire garage organization system. This waterproof, bugproof, slotted wall paneling is the only garage paneling that is strength certified and fire rated by Underwriter’s Laboratories. In addition, TekPanel’s reflective surface makes the walls easy to keep clean and gives the garage a bright, clean appearance. I had to share. I don’t know what the internet has become, but this is one of the worst articles I’ve ever read. It said the same things over and over again. None of the so-called tips are useful in the least. Organize a wall! Organize a corner! Organize an area! Not helpful.

However, if all you need is a regular mop, see our separate report on mops for the top choices. We also recommend the best vacuum cleaners, stick vacuums and handheld vacuums for getting your floor debris free and ready to steam clean.

If you just really don’t have enough space in your garage, you can add-on easily. You just have to ensure that you are set where building codes are concerned and then you can add just a small section to give you the extra storage that you need. A simple wooden foundation takes just a little time and is fairly inexpensive.Via: Familyhandyman – Get More Garage Storage With a Bump-Out Addition

Gypsum board protection is also required at all structural elements supporting the roof and any attic or floor above so most of the other walls would need to be covered with gypsum board. To avoid these requirements you would need to locate the garage more than 3 ft from the house.

Please don’t keep every pot that comes into your home, or you’ll run out of storage space! Keep just a few in different sizes so that you can repot plants. I like to label plants as I plant them, so that when they die back in the fall, I’ll remember what occupied that space. Use a pencil to write on Popsicle sticks – which doesn’t wash off or fade. Be sure to write the date you planted it. I like to keep the smaller items together in a basket on a shelf, or in a plastic baggie inside a flowerpot.

Planning the layout and buying materials can take a few hours, but you can do the actual installation, including ripping the plywood shelves and strips, in less than a day. Put up horizontal strips even if you have exposed studs or block walls—they’ll make it much easier to install shelf standards and hooks. Apply finish to the strips and shelves, if desired, before installing them.

Our local AHJ requires 5/8 FireX on the ceiling and the common wall (even though my wall has 8 of concrete in it). The aforementioned self-closing door with a 20 minute rating is also required. I went ahead and did FireX on all four walls, as the outer walls are studs, and it wasn’t that much more money. I always thought the door was more about CO than smoke. I shouldn’t have used the term ‘fire rated’.

Gardening tasks are a lot easier to accomplish when you are using the right tool for the job. However, with so many tools and gadgets on the market, it can be confusing to know which ones are really worth your hard earned cash. Here are 10 tools every gardener with a garden shed should have.

Style suggestion: Multi-purpose storage wall. Why: If your house is short on storage space of all kinds, transforming a blank wall right into a bank of cabinets can fix numerous storage problems in one design step.

The Bissell 19404 PowerFresh Steam Mop Hard Floor Steam Cleaner outperformed the competition in several of the key metrics we used to determine the best steam mop. It heats up in less than a minute, can be used for 20 minutes at a time, and the floor dries in less time than it takes to put the unit away. Most importantly, the built-in easy scrubber and scrubby microfiber pad work with the steam to remove soil and grime in a matter of seconds. The icing on the cake is its removable tank, which makes filling and emptying the tank with water a breeze.

The cost and complexity of your irrigation equipment depends largely on the you live in. Most gardeners can get by with a hose and a fan-type sprinkler for irrigation. For areas where the hose cannot reach, you will need a watering can. When it comes to cost, you usually get what you pay for with hoses. Look for a hose that is rated for at least 50 lbs per square inch of pressure and reinforced with mesh to prevent puncturing. Non-kinking hoses are a bonus, and if you are ever able to find once that is absolutely un-kinkable, let me know!

Steam mops are a good idea when executed well, but check for desired temperature at the tool surface (usually, the higher the better), and change or clean applicator pads regularly. Dirt must go somewhere, and if your steam pad becomes saturated, it then begins to release and spread soil.

I ordered two packs and both arrived with damaged corners and one panel had broken in two. Luckily, I think the damaged corners will be hidden with trim and the bits broken off are on the back side of the panel so am going to use them rather than try to return them. The problem is that the 8ft by 1ft panels are cumbersome to handle so the delivery person has a hard time unloading them and delivering them. I imagine they are handled badly throughout the process, being long and heavy as both packages arrived scuffed and scarred.

As you place each garage wall framing structure into position, you want to first make sure it is in a straight-line before you secure your bracing. You do this with a string line run along the top plate out from the edge of the plate about 1/2. Simply nail a 1 x 1 x 4 piece of pine to each end stud and run the string to each end. Then move the wall in and out with the interior braces until the wall matches the string line from one end to the other. Once you have it near perfect, nail the braces to the stakes in the earth. You can do this same procedure at the bottom plate with the string and a sledge-hammer to tap the wall in and out before tightening your nuts on the anchor-bolts.

Both of the Bissell brand models we tested performed highly in terms of final cleaning results. The Symphony was able to remove dried-on soil in ten seconds, when using the vacuum function. It also picked up all the dirt and grime in our high traffic areas, although it wasn’t as bright of a finish as the 19404 PowerFresh.

After a day of pulling out a bucket, tossing in cleaner, mopping the floors and waiting forever for them to dry, I decided to try a steam mop. Truthfully, this was the least expensive one at WM, but I have a Shark vacuum that I love, so I figured for the price, it was worth a try. We have 30 year old vinyl tile floors and this does a great job on them! It gets up stuff that has been there for years. It dries in almost no time and because I have to pump the handle to get the steam out, I get a decent workout to go with the clean floors. But I don’t have to bend hardly at all – I’m tall and the handle is long enough for me. It’s low profile slips it under the stove as well, so it cleans a bit in an area that almost never gets cleaned. It takes tap water, has a long cord and the pads velcro on and off and go into the washing machine and dryer. Plus no chemicals involved at all. This is worth every penny and I’m mopping far more often than I did before.

Garage wall framing is not as complicated as it may seem. If you follow the simple steps and process we show you below, you will be able to master the process before you know it. All it takes is a little patience and proper planning before you begin so that you can avoid the inevitable boo-boo’s that often occur from the willy-nilly approach when building a garage.

I preferred to buy as we went, like I was doing with our kitchen items and pretty much everything else, but Paul was firm. Two years later those boxes are still in our garage and have been joined by a few more from his own mother’s purge of her garage. Paul isn’t a pack rat, and we have a big garage, so it isn’t a problem, but for me and other Not Naturally Organized folks, boxes of free stuff we may or may not need are to be avoided like the plague.

A few nails in stud walls make handy hangers to hold tools like shovels, rakes and hoes. Take a pen and draw an outline of each tool on the wall behind it. The outline not only helps show where the tools belong, but the sight of an empty space lets you know what’s missing. If you go a step further and spray paint the handles of your tools a bright florescent orange, you’ll have no trouble finding them in the garden.

The one I got was green – it was horribly stiff and the corn bristles were very thick. A good number of individual bristles were bent over and twisted. This is not a good old fashioned broom. I have an old whisk broom from 20 or more years ago so have it to compare to and this is NOT an old time corn whisk broom. If you look at the photo of my old and almost out of commission one – you can see the color difference and the size of the bristles. It really makes a difference in how well it sweeps.

The excellent selection of tools covers all possible problems – we had no problems cleaning windows or removing mildew from grouting. Both of the tanks – the one for water and the separate one for cleaning detergent – pop off, so you can refill them easily.

You might expect a steam mop to be more convenient than an ordinary squeeze mop, with no squeegee to squeeze and no pail of water to deal with. You might also expect the steam to loosen dried food spills effectively, and perhaps even sanitize floors and other surfaces. But not all of these expectations matched the reality when we last tested these products.

In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels and film adaptations, broomsticks are a common form of transport for wizards and witches in Britain. These are also used for the magical sport of Quidditch, in which players use their broomsticks to fly around a field and shoot goals.

At a high enough temperature, steam vapor can kill bacteria, dust mites and mold spores. While kitchen and bathroom floors may not be one of the top germ hot spots in your home (according to the National Sanitation Foundation’s 2011 germ study, your dish sponge and toothbrush holder are likelier culprits), floors can still harbor bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli in lesser quantities, by contact with shoes or spills.

Organization experts stress the importance of getting items up off the floor. When it comes to lawn and garden equipment, I am a huge fan of using vertical space whenever possible, says Lisa Mark, certified professional organizer at The Time Butler in Los Altos, California. These systems convert otherwise unusable wall space into great storage space. Think of your garage walls as a blank canvas for arranging useful art: rakes and shovels, sprinklers, pruners, weed whackers, and more.
