Our attached garage is strictly to park the car, and as such, drywall is fine, maybe with a scrubbable paint. On the other hand, my workshop in the barn needs a better solution. One of my favorites is metal wainscoting part way up. Metal roofing or liner metal is fast and easy, and requires further finishing. I’m also going to use it on the ceiling. I’ll probably put the wainscoting over OSB as a support. Some use good old pegboard for the upper part, although slatwall seems to be replacing it.

You should be able to clean multiple rooms with a full PowerFresh water tank, but when it’s time to refill, the process is simple. You grab the clear blue tank on its textured sides, lift up, unscrew the stopper, fill it up, put the cap back on, and slide it back into place. This sounds obvious, but some steam mops provide tiny, narrow-spouted filling cups that you pour into the mop itself, or removable tanks that are heavier than they should be. If you find yourself having to refill your mop halfway through a job, the PowerFresh tank is the easiest to work with.

You might also consider using PVC piping (available from any do-it-yourself store) to make a standing storage rack as thin and long as you need. You’d need 8 – 12 corner pieces (depending on height) and 8 – 12 straight pieces. These can be bought in all varieties of length.

The solution is to create a framework of horizontal wood strips and inexpensive shelf standards. It can hold almost any arrangement of shelving and hooks, at any point on the wall, and it’s easy to rearrange.

Lightweight, sturdy and easy to stow away in smaller cupboards, the Russell Hobbs RHMSM300 is an ideal handheld cleaner for small jobs and tight budgets. It transforms into a steam mop with the addition of a tubular handle and floor-head, but its modest steam levels are better suited to handheld mode, or for quickly mopping over freshly vacuumed hard floors.

The Karcher SC1 Steam Stick is a lightweight, versatile steam cleaner that can be used as a steam mop or simply as a handheld cleaner. It comes with a hand tool, small plastic brush, power nozzle and detail nozzle, as well as two 45cm-long tubes and a 110cm hose. For flats and small houses with minimal storage space, it doesn’t get more compact and practical than this.

Attach a board with hat pegs or coat hooks to the side of your cart. Use the pegs or hooks to neatly hang your tools from the cart so you can reach the easily as you kneel in the garden. This will also help you free up space on the top of the cart for your seedlings, pots, fertilizer, or other supplies.[10]

If you’re going to commit to cleaning certain floors with steam, you want to be able to clean all of that floor. The Bissell PowerFresh’s flexible joint and the shape of its cleaning head (rounded on one side, flat on the other) allows you to get right up against a floor edge, or into and around rounded areas. Its handle and tank can dip lower than most other steam mops, so the steaming head maneuvers underneath sinks and other furniture. The PowerFresh can also lock into a standing position, while most other steam mops make you find something to lean them against.

The cost and complexity of your irrigation equipment depends largely on the climate you live in. Most gardeners can get by with a hose and a fan-type sprinkler for irrigation. For areas where the hose cannot reach, you will need a watering can. When it comes to cost, you usually get what you pay for with hoses. Look for a hose that is rated for at least 50 lbs per square inch of pressure and reinforced with mesh to prevent puncturing. Non-kinking hoses are a bonus, and if you are ever able to find once that is absolutely un-kinkable, let me know!

Now, lay all of your plates in order as shown in the diagram at the left with the top plates above the sole plates and use the small framing square to start laying-out the 2 x 4 stud locations. Start at the left side where the first stud will go and align the square with the edge of the plates and mark a 1-1/2 wide space with your pencil and place an X in the middle of the mark. That means a full length stud goes there. Now measure over with your tape a full 16 and mark it. Place your square on the plates and draw a line on each side of the 1-1/2 wide blade.

Oh, and if you have multiple pairs of gloves, store them like you would your socks. Roll the pairs up together so they’re easy to find – and you’re not wasting time digging for a matching pair (I have lots of garden gloves too, haha!).

On a pair of pencil marks between two sets of handles, drill pilot holes (be sure to switch to a smaller bit first) for the spring-clip fasteners, and twist in the screws. Still, as we noted, owners rank the Shark Steam Pocket 3501 very highly. One feature in particular that they say is pretty nifty is Shark’s signature flippable, 2-sided cleaning pad. When one side is dirty, just flip it to the other side to finish the job — both expert test sites like that feature too, because you don’t have to touch a dirty, hot, wet pad with your hands. The pads can be tossed in your washing machine. Shark says that each pad lasts for about 20 washes, but replacement Shark All-Purpose Cleaning Pockets (Est. $9 for 2) are readily available, as are generic options.

Everyone up here uses sheet rock, plastered/textured just like normal interior walls. If you rock/plaster, I’d highly suggest painting it all right away since paint is easy to clean and plaster just absorbs dirt

Steam mops are not for everyone. Some people get a sense of satisfaction out of working hard when they’re cleaning, but for those of you that are looking for a more effective and eco-friendly way of cleaning that also sanitizes a steam mop is definitely worth considering.

Last, steam mops often tout benefits such as sanitizing floors and killing bacteria. This may or may not be true (we didn’t test). Do you really expect your floor to be sanitary, or stay that way for any length of time? We don’t, and neither do most researchers.

The Bissell PowerFresh 1940 is very easy to use, say owners — just fill, plug it in, wait about 30 seconds, and start mopping. And testing at YourBestDigs.com found that it does heat up that quickly. Some owners would rather see a dedicated power switch rather than plugging in and unplugging the mop to turn it on and off, though. The PowerFresh’s 15-ounce water tank produces about 15 minutes of steam on the high setting, and up to 30 minutes on lower settings. YourBestDigs.com found that 20 minutes was about average.

And for the curious, the outside view. David is about 1/2 way done with getting in the wood for next winter. The verticle lumber helps with the cord wood stacks and keeping an opening to the tool area. The tool storage area is to the right behind the solid wall.

If sanitizing is your top priority, we recommend you take a look at the Sienna Luna Plus Steam Mop (Est. $170). With the ability to heat up to 212 degrees, it sanitizes your floor more quickly than most steam mops, however you still have to hold it over the area you want to sanitize for a minimum of 8 seconds, but no more than 15 or the very hot steam could damage your floor.

So will the shared wall and any wall that that supports the floor above. Since one wall with be mostly overhead doors, there is probably only one wall left that might or might not have to be protected with drywall.

“I have one of those tile floors that makes people curse. It shows every speck of dirt and water spot when mopped. To add to the challenge, I live where there is more dirt than manicured lawn and have two large dogs. My daughter, who researches EVERYTHING, got one of these and was so impressed that she brought it with her on her last visit so that I could try it out. I did and then ordered one right away. It works well, and it’s much less hassle than my old method of mopping. It makes it easy to spot-mop without dedicating an entire morning to the process. The only improvement I would like to see is a way to add a scent or my preferred cleaning solution, because I miss the smell of a freshly mopped floor. Even so, I’m quite happy with my purchase.”

Picking out the perfect steam mop for your home isn’t so easy. With the wide variety of options on the market, you need to know what to look for. How large should the reservoir be? Should steam settings be adjustable? Which extras make a difference and which are unnecessary? Overwhelmed already?
