The Twist & Shout checks all the major boxes for a spin mop: It’s easy to wring out the microfiber mop head, it maneuvers well into corners and under furniture, and it does a great job of cleaning floors without leaving them too wet. There are also no flimsy pedals to break – just push the mop handle down into the bucket to activate the wringer. The handle adjusts up to 56 inches.

The O-Cedar ProMist looks like it has a thick microfiber head — a good thing. We love their dust mop, which has a similar head. But we haven’t tested the ProMist, so take this as informed opinion, not a claim of fact.

The Mopnado has the biggest bucket we tested (20 by 13 by 11½ inches, 5.1 pounds), and the Casabella the next largest (19 by 11½ by 11 inches, 4.6 pounds); compare these numbers with the O-Cedar bucket’s (14 by 10 by 11 inches, 1.4 pounds). Yet because they can barely be filled halfway (the wringer, which obviously has to stay above water, takes up the top half of the bucket), they actually hold less water than the O-Cedar, meaning more-frequent refills. And unlike the O-Cedar, their wringers can’t be removed, meaning they’re single-purpose tools that take up a ton of valuable closet space (they’re so big they cannot fit easily under most sinks). Both buckets also feature unnecessary gizmos. Each has a tiny soap dispenser that’s fussy to refill, and in the Mopnado’s case incredibly fussy to remove for refilling. (Squirting detergent from the bottle is much easier.) The Casabella has a silly drain plug, a tiny drawer whose purpose is unclear (replacement mopheads don’t fit in it). The Mopnado has a fold-out pull handle that’s so short you have to bend over halfway and crab-walk when you use it.

Spin mops are regular floor mops that include a system for wringing out excess water. This is usually a bucket with a wringer that is operated either by a foot pedal or by placing the mop in the wringer, causing it to spin. Some actually squeeze and wring the mop out, while others just use centrifugal force to spin the mop dry. The latter is superior because it does a better job of squeezing out excess moisture. Spin mop heads are round and the strings or strips are made from lightweight, absorbent materials. Thanks to a swiveling head and lay-flat handle, they maneuver well, even in narrow spaces. They can be used with any type of floor cleaner.

Though some sources claim that colonial American houses often lacked closets because of a closet tax imposed by the British crown,[3] others argue that closets were absent in most houses simply because their residents had few possessions.[4]

Handles with reusable mop heads should be hung and left to dry in a ventilated area. If there is no ventilation, a wet mop will stay wet and harmful bacteria will begin to grow. If this happens, do not bleach the mop handle, frame, or head, as this can cause erosion and shorten the lifespan of the entire mop. Instead, thoroughly clean the mop with soap and water. If bacteria or mold growth is clearly visible, you may want to dispose of the mop. Cleaning your mops after every use is a sure way of increasing their longevity.

In some mops, there are fibers locked into the yarn that contain an antimicrobial additive. This additive helps protect the mop head from deteriorating by preventing growth bacteria, mold, mildew, and yeast in the mop head.

This compact rack is strong and simple to build. You can store shovels, rakes, a sledgehammer—any long-handled tools—conveniently up and out of the way. The unit holds up to 14 items, giving you more flexibility and storage capacity than nails pounded in the wall. See how to build it.

Microfiber is made of polyester and/or polyamide, both of which are synthetic materials, and these extremely fine-diameter fibers tend to have high absorbency, durability, washability, and non-biodegradability. That combination makes microfiber an excellent mop material. It captures dirt and dust and draws water out of even tiny crevices (e.g., grout lines); it soaks up a lot of liquid and stands up to hard scrubbing; and it’s machine-washable, and therefore economical in the long term (and it hardly breaks the bank to begin with). Plus, it won’t rot and stink.

The Reveal was edged out of the top spot because some reviewers say it doesn’t have the overall cleaning performance or durability of the Swiffer WetJet. Although most say it cleans quite well, others say it’s best for very light cleaning jobs such as homes without a lot of traffic. There are also reports of the spray trigger giving out after a short period of time. In addition, Rubbermaid gets mixed reviews for customer service, while Swiffer is reportedly more responsive to complaints.

Wet Mop Kits are available in cellulose and sponge material construction. Choose kits with wood, steel, or aluminum handles. Mops with Microban® antimicrobial protection help to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew. Butterfly and roll-type wringers help to wring out excess water during use.

Metal pegboard strips are ideal for situations where you need a single, sturdy strip of pegboard—like in the garage for hanging long-handled tools. The strips have 1/4-in. holes and built-in edge flanges for standoffs, and they’re outrageously sturdy.

I used the Shark Steam Mop for a few years. Very effective! Absorbant, washable, no chemicals, just water and white vinegar. I’m probably going to buy another one since NOBODY makes a good roller mop (Special shout out to Libman, your roller mop is the worst on the market).

A floor mop is a necessity for frequent touch-ups or quickly cleaning up spills. Floor mops have either a set of strings, strips of cloth or a sponge for cleaning and absorbing spills. They can be used with a bucket, or you can just wet them in the sink, wring and mop. Some have systems for wringing, while others need to be wrung out manually, or you can use a bucket with a wringer. Owners like that these mops can be used with any cleaning solution they choose.

Solution: Mount mop and broom holders on the back of the closet door. (Try the Crawford Spring Grip; $4, acehardware.com.) They’ll be out of the way and can air-dry. Even better, for ventilation, insert a screen panel on the lower half of the door.
