Step three: Divide and conquer by breaking the room up into smaller sections, and then sweep each one using “fairly short deliberate strokes,” she says. Deal with each pile of dirt you create by sweeping it into a dustpan within that section—don’t try to move that pile all around! As for that “dreaded line of dirt” that the pan always seems to leave behind—which Maker refers to as “crazy-making,” and we don’t blame her—she recommends dealing with it using a damp paper towel.

Unflagged Bristles—These are for larger particles of debris. Since the bristles aren’t frayed, this type tends to last longer. These broom bristles are better for outdoor use, since you will have to sweep up pebbles or gravel.

Collect, don’t scatter. The number one goal for dusting: to collect and remove dust, not scatter it. Forget images of flapping dust cloths. Instead, dust with the calm and controlled motions of a Tai Chi practitioner. Coax dust motes into your tools; don’t disperse them into the air so that they resettle on the surfaces you are trying to clean.

While brooms nowadays all work the same way and use pretty much the same materials, the dustpan is quite another matter. Depending on the manufacturer it can be larger, allowing you for more sweeping before having to empty it. It can also come with nifty features such as teeth that can remove dirt and dust from broom bristles.

If you have pets in the house, this broom will make your life easier. It is great and keeps our vacuum from getting clogged up with hair. Easy as can be to use and we plan on getting the larger one for outdoors for our porches and drive because it works so much better than a regular broom. Quite a broom!

Broom bristle fibers can also be flagged or unflagged—flagged broom fibers have split ends like frizzy hair. Their fine tips are very good for sweeping up dust, but terrible for thicker, heavier materials—aka, the larger debris you need an outdoor broom to be able to move. The best outdoor brooms at least have unflagged fibers, and ideally, a combination of flagged and unflagged. Out of our sample, only three brooms—the O’Cedar 24” push broom (our top pick), the Quickie (budget pick), and the Libman 24″ Multi-Surface Heavy Duty Push Broom—had this mix of flagged fibers and unflagged fibers, which can grab fine particles and manage coarse pushing as well.

Everyone is cutting back: Many restaurants are limiting guests to one glass of water; using water from ice buckets to mop floors; and adding aerators to water taps to literally add air and limit water flow.

It’s not your grandfather’s pegboard. Durable steel panels are stronger and longer-lasting than conventional pegboard, and they can hold magnets. The O-Cedar’s refills don’t have the best build quality. There’s a small loop that O-Cedar told us is designed to help pull the head on and off the frame. (We think the loop is also useful for hanging the dust mop head to dry.) The loop worked well to hang the cloth, but when we used it to lightly tug the cover off the frame, the weak stitching on one side of the loop broke. The next time we washed the O-Cedar’s head, the loop came off entirely. This isn’t a dealbreaker because the loop isn’t crucial, but it was annoying to see it break so easily.

“Most dustpans have an edge-to-edge ridge, but our pick’s ridge tapers near the sides of the large polypropylene body to make it easier to empty the dustpan into the trash. This design foiled our original water capacity test—the liquid flowed out the sides—but solid debris was no problem.”

While some had mentioned it was no longer available from Amazon Casabella has a readily availabe coupon code to cut the price of the broom in half so even with shipping you come out ahead of the game.

Beyond costs, the Swiffer is just not as effective at cleaning as the O-Cedar dust mop. The Swiffer is effective at picking up dust, dirt, and cat hair, but it can’t get into cracks or corners as well as our pick because it uses flat sheets instead of a textured cloth. Plus, the O-Cedar Dual Action Flip Mop’s head is almost twice the width of the Swiffer’s, so the Swiffer takes nearly twice the time and energy to clean the same space.

The $10 OXO Good Grips Dustpan and Brush Set is a whisk-style brush set with very soft bristles that fling particles. The dustpan is similar to our pick, with that excellent contoured lip—but it is narrower lacks the comfortable handle, and it’s paired with a terrible brush that isn’t worth the extra $4. According to our survey, most people don’t want a whisk brush, and this set wasn’t good enough to change our minds.

To test dustpans, we tried each one with our broom pick by cleaning half a teaspoon of flour and 1.5 teaspoons of cat litter. This test showed us how well each dustpan worked with our recommended broom and how effective each is at picking up, holding, and not spilling particles of all sizes. Some dustpans came with brushes; we tested those with their own brushes and with our pick for best broom. After eliminating six dustpans that were abysmal at cleaning or way too small for our broom, we filled the remaining four with water to measure their capacity, and our panel used the finalists in the Chinatown test lab to find a winner.

Personally, for close range I just use microfiber cloths or fabric softener sheets. It sounds weird, but the fabric softener sheets do a fine job of cleaning out lint traps too. I also toss them in with some water in on grimy pots or pans. You’re going to throw it in the trash anyways, might as well get some second life out of it. If you needed a smaller hand duster you could grab this: http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Microfiber-Duster/dp/B00940DV6W/ref=zg_bs_2245499011_2

Change your mop pad as necessary. Unlike with traditional string mops, you’ll need to replace your cloth mop’s pad multiple times during the cleaning process. You’ll know it’s time for a new pad when your current 1 starts to leave behind dirt and other forms of residue.[14]

You may have seen similar products on TV, elsewhere on the internet, or at a home or garden show locally. When comparing this household rubber broom with any other similar item, you will find it to be easier to use, more sturdy, and longer lasting. If you compare it to the regular type of broom you are sweeping your house with now, there is no comparison. Chances are you’ve got an ordinary broom, made of corn or vinyl, which easily flares and doesn’t do the best job of cleaning. Dirt and dust only fly away as you try to sweep them up, and you never really achieve a dirt-free floor. The Household Rubber Broom from Sweepa makes cleaning any hard floor incredibly easy and will replace the tool you are using now. It has the ability to thoroughly sweep in a single pass and because it works so well, you will use less effort to achieve better results. The included squeegee on the back side is nice for drying floors, cleaning spills or doing windows. The flexible bristles are great for sweeping any type of debris, but can also be used with soap and water for scrubbing floors, washing boats, RV’s and vehicles, or cleaning hard to reach windows. This amazing tool is the easiest way to sweep annoying stuff like sand, pet fur, hair and fine particles, but you can use it on all of the regular dirt too. It is the perfect size for use at home, but can also be ideal for hair salons, pet groomers, kennels, professional cleaners and more.
