When you’ve determined the starting height of the plywood, measure up from the floor at one end of the wall and drive a nail. Then measure down to the nail from the ceiling and use that measurement to make a pencil mark at the other end of the wall. (Don’t measure up from the floor, since garage floors often slope.) Hook your chalk line on the nail, stretch it to the pencil mark and snap a line (Photo 1).
Use a stud finder to mark the locations of the existing studs (Image 1). Install the furring strips vertically at each stud and horizontally across the top and bottom edges using 3 wood screws. Continue until you have a grid layout (Image 2).

I’m a woman in my sixties. I own and use the tools. I take care of my tools. When my husband or son use them, they rarely get put back where they belong. It looks like I’ll have to follow your lead and set up a wall so I can immediately see if there’s something lost in the garage someplace. I’ll give them two days to put it back or go out and buy a more expensive version. Then if it was my son who is negligent, I’ll take the cost out of his next birthday or Christmas gift money.
A durable wire grid that attaches to the wall creates endless organization possibilities: Hang sports equipment, garden tools, bikes, and more. Mounted either directly on the garage wall or on slatwall, the Organized Living Activity Organizer features accessories that can be readjusted after installation to suit changing storage needs. Maximize hand tool storage in a tool cabinet with this slick tip. The key to this project is a 4-ft.-long by-pass sliding door hardware set (about $15 at a home center). You mount 1/4-in. pegboard onto it, making sure to provide enough room (2 in.) to hang tools on the pegboard and still allow it to slide by the door in front.
I have a gripe with the National Electrical Code. It requires only one outlet in a garage—and a single outlet is all most builders install. That’s an insult to all of us garage dwellers and our beloved power tools.
Want to get that leaf blower and string trimmer off the garage floor and out of your way? This easy-to-make garden tool storage rack has room to hang all your power landscaping tools, with a shelf above to hold battery chargers and extra string reels!
This little garden shed is under our deck, and it’s a total mess! This photo is pretty embarrassing, but is typical of what it looks like after a gardening session. I had just finished up planting the climbing vines for my trellis when I took this picture.

So far it seems ok. But there were not enough tool holders. I used almost all of them on the first two 2 foot panels I installed. I am going to look at a local big box store to see if I can find suitable alternatives. If not, I may contact the manufacturer to see if they offer additional packages of these holders. But it is is a disappointment-considering the price of these organizers. Probably would not recommend without a warning.

A screen-door closer, or a pneumatic cylinder, is a device connecting the screen door to the door jamb. It is usually located at the top of the door and is designed to close the screen door automatically after opening. They can be easily adjusted to quicken or slow the door’s closing speed.
This might mean your tracks are either dented, falling, or otherwise misaligned. This is not just annoying; it’s dangerous. Misaligned or damaged tracks can cause the door to cease working or to fall off its tracks. If your door seems to be working fine overall, feel free to inspect the issue further. But if your door is stuck, slanted, or looks unstable, call a professional who will have the right tools to fix the problem.

Measure and lay out the locations of wall switches or outlets that will be installed in the pegboard (Image 1). Use a jigsaw to cut the holes for the outlets and switches (Image 3). Be sure to size the cut so that the trim plate will cover the opening. Hold the pegboard up to the wall to make sure it fits and make any needed adjustments to the pegboard’s overall size.
Some folk talk about the work/life balance. My problem is the work/find tool balance. Why is it that getting tools out for a job is so much easier than putting them back in the right place? I can’t decide if your project is a work of art or the art of work. I think the only time I could ever get as neat and tidy as you, is when I stop working and that ain’t any time soon.

It’s true—we love PVC pipe. Or let’s say we appreciate the way it inspires and accommodates tool and hardware storage. Here’s the latest PVC gem. Cut 2-in. pieces of 3-in. PVC and saw away a 2-in. section so it looks like Pac Man. (Remember Pac Man?) Drill screw holes and attach the hangers to studs or shop walls. Space pairs for convenient horizontal storage of longer tools such as levels and glue clamps, and use single segments for ropes, electrical cords or anything else that you want securely stored yet easily accessible. Try this tip and you’ll learn never to be peeved by leftover PVC.
