The room itself is cobwebbed, and dingy with old paint; its floor is strewn with grey sand, in a fashion that has elsewhere fallen into long disuse; and it is easy to conclude, from the general slovenliness of the place, that this is a sanctuary into which womankind, with her tools of magic, the broom and mop, has very infrequent access.

Before the 19th century, broom-making was an idiosyncratic art; most were fashioned at home from whatever materials were at hand. The basic design involved binding the sweeping bundle to a wooden stick with rope or linen twine. However, these homespun brooms had short lives and had to be replaced often.

I thought the design of the mop was great when I was looking at this mop in the store. I don’t want to get my hands in the mop water so this looked good. I’ve had the mop two weeks and used it three times to mop a 6 x 10 section of vinyl. First mopping: immediately found that too much water is left in the sponge and there’s no way to get more out of it First mopping: found that once squeezed, the mop head doesn’t return to a flat position on it’s own First mopping: found that the scrub brush is not positioned correctly. If you want to use it on the floor you’d need to bend over and hold the mop handle very low to the floor Second mopping, handle bent at the weak spot where the wringer handle is Third mopping (trying to get more life out of this pathetic product) mop head comes off while I was trying to rinse it in the mop bucket. Gross…had to reach in and retrieve it. I’m looking for my receipt so I can return it. I rarely write reviews, or return products, but this mop is a joke.

Apart from its use in heraldry, the Broom has been associated with several popular traditions. In some parts, it used to be considered a sign of plenty, when it bore many flowers. The flowering tops were used for house decoration at the Whitsuntide festival but it was considered unlucky to employ them for menial purposes when in full bloom.
The main alkaloid in the plant is l-sparteine in the floral parts of the plant in concentrations ranging up to 0.22%, but may exceed 1.5% in other parts of the plant. In addition, the alkaloids sarothamnine, 4 genisteine, 4 lupanine 5 and oxysparteine 6 have been identified. A number of minor alkaloids and other componenets have also been isolated. 7 The flavone glycoside scoparoside has also been isolated, primarily from the flowers. Apparently, the toxic alkaloid cytisine is not present in this species. 8
