The room itself is cobwebbed, and dingy with old paint; its floor is strewn with grey sand, in a fashion that has elsewhere fallen into long disuse; and it is easy to conclude, from the general slovenliness of the place, that this is a sanctuary into which womankind, with her tools of magic, the broom and mop, has very infrequent access.

You can build and paint this locker in a weekend, although you might need another half day to give the pressure-treated trim a second coat of paint. The straightforward construction requires only basic power tools—a circular saw with a standard carbide blade and a drill. An air compressor and nail gun aren’t necessary but will make the framing and trim work easier (and faster!).

Fill the trenches with pea gravel so they’re roughly level. Then cut treated 2×6 sleepers to size and set them over the gravel so the outside edges are 4 ft. apart. Place a 4-ft. level over one of the sleepers. Level it, then adjust the second sleeper until it’s level with the first (Photo 1).

During World War II, American submarine crews would hoist a broom onto their boat’s fore-truck when returning to port to indicate that they had swept the seas clean of enemy shipping.[10] The tradition has been devalued in recent years by submarine crews who fly a broom simply when returning from their boat’s shake-down cruise. This tradition no doubt stems from the action of the Dutch admiral Maarten Tromp who tied a broom to his main mast after defeating the British admiral Robert Blake at the Battle of Dungeness in 1652. This often been interpreted as a message that he would sweep the British from the seas. This story remains unsubstantiated,[11] but may have its origin in the tradition of hoisting a broom as a sign that a ship was for sale, which seems more likely as Tromp had captured two of Blake’s ships in the battle.[12]

‘In flowers without honey, such as the Broom, there is a curious way of exploding to expel the pollen. In the Broom the stigma lies in the midst of the five anthers of the longer stamens, and when a bee visits the flower those of the shorter explode and disperse their pollen on the bee pressing upon the closed edges of the keel petal. The shock is not enough to drive the bee away . . . The split now quickly extends further . . . when a second and more violent explosion occurs. The style was horizontal with a flattened end below the stigma; but when freed from restraint it curls inwards, forming more than a complete spiral turn. It springs up and strikes the back of the bee with its stigma. The bee then gathers pollen with its mouth and legs.’ (From The Fertilization of Flowers, by Professor H. Mueller, pp. 195-6)

Large hand-held gardening tools should be stored in upright containers. An over-sized obelisk not only provides shelter to an air conditioning unit but also provides a home to shovels and cultivators.

Modern broom-making truly began, however, with the rise in cultivation of a previously underappreciated crop that would soon be called “broomcorn.” A species of tasseled grass (sorghum vulgare) that somewhat resembles the sweet corn plant, broomcorn’s seeds and fibers had previously been used for animal feed and not much else. Then, according to historian Gregory H. Nobles, in 1797, a farmer from Hadley, Mass., named Levi Dickinson had the idea to use the grass to make a broom for his wife, as well as a few extra to peddle to neighbors. His broom—a round bundle of broomcorn lashed to a stick with some weaving around the top—proved to be more durable and effective than previous models, and it was soon in demand around the region. By 1800, Dickinson and his sons were making several hundred brooms a year to sell throughout the northeastern United States.

Garbage. Waste of money. First time I tried to use the wringer one of the plastic pin things broke. Not the ones that twist on and off to replace mop head. One of the pins in the center of the head assembly. How can I return it if it is dirty and extremely odd shape box that was beat up in transit? I guess I am out the money. DO NOT BUY, unless you want to take the chance that you end up with a good one. One star was more than I wanted to rate it, if there was a ZERO rating I would have used that rating.

You can make your own brooms! If you have a green thumb, you can start by growing your own broomcorn. But even if you can’t grow broomcorn, you can order it from a supplier (see Resources at the end of this article). Photos for each step of the broom-making process are available in the Image Gallery; see link above.

—Cultivation—Broom is most easily raised from seed, sown broadcast in the open air, as soon as ripe. Seedlings may be transplanted in autumn or spring to their permanent position. Prune directly after flowering, if the shoots have not been gathered for medicinal use, shortening the old shoots to the base of promising young ones.
