Since these organizers bear weight, their construction should feature strong and durable material. Plastic is the favorite material for broom holders because of their lightness. However, they are not strong enough unless they are toughened. The best brands are those features toughened ABS plastic. Some great brands are made of lightweight metal.

Magnetic knife holders sold at kitchen-supply stores can be mounted to the wall with a few screws and will keep paintbrush bristles from being squashed. Hang the brushes bristle end down for proper drying and to minimize the amount of dust that collects between the bristles. You can also store other metal tools and utensils this way.

For my garden salvage project, I used colorful outdoor spigot handles and a length of reclaimed door casing to create a cheery wall-hung tool rack. The handle hooks are great for keeping my hand trowels and rakes at the ready and for holding my sun hat.

Lightweight, sturdy and easy to stow away in smaller cupboards, the Russell Hobbs RHMSM300 is an ideal handheld cleaner for small jobs and tight budgets. It transforms into a steam mop with the addition of a tubular handle and floor-head, but its modest steam levels are better suited to handheld mode, or for quickly mopping over freshly vacuumed hard floors.

This superior quality holder is highly versatile ideal for holding brooms, mops, sports equipment, garden equipment and other tools. It has 5 friction grips as well as 6 hooks capable of holding up to 11 items at a go with maximum holding weight of 7.5 pounds of weight per friction grip. The design is clean and compact to save space and accentuate your interior décor.

Our local AHJ requires 5/8 FireX on the ceiling and the common wall (even though my wall has 8 of concrete in it). The aforementioned self-closing door with a 20 minute rating is also required. I went ahead and did FireX on all four walls, as the outer walls are studs, and it wasn’t that much more money. I always thought the door was more about CO than smoke. I shouldn’t have used the term ‘fire rated’.

This is one of those clever “Why didn’t I think of that?” ideas. So simple, too! Use a sturdy kitchen paper towel holder (like this one shown in the picture) for your garbage bags in the garage. Because garbage bags are considerably heavier than paper towels, you’ll want to make sure the towel holder is secured well to the wall. You would also need a skinny rod to ensure that it will fit through the small opening in the center of the garbage bags.

We repeated our tests an ordinary $15 squeeze mop, using hot tap water with some mild detergent. The squeeze mop cleaned our floors at least as well as the steam mops, if not better. Of course, we had to scrub more vigorously and allow extra time to refresh the mop repeatedly in a pail of hot water. Despite that, our testers found the squeeze mop strangely more satisfying.

Organization experts stress the importance of getting items up off the floor. When it comes to lawn and garden equipment, I am a huge fan of using vertical space whenever possible, says Lisa Mark, certified professional organizer at The Time Butler in Los Altos, California. These systems convert otherwise unusable wall space into great storage space. Think of your garage walls as a blank canvas for arranging useful art: rakes and shovels, sprinklers, pruners, weed whackers, and more.

“I love this mop, but I was skeptical at first. One guy said in a review that he would sleep with it. I told myself, you won’t ever love a cleaning appliance like that. But then I got this and cleaned all my floors today. Twice. That’s how dirty they were (I thought they were pretty clean!) I would absolutely sleep with this mop. It’s easy to use with NO SCRUBBING and no streaking on my laminate! What?! Yes. It’s that good. Order it. You won’t be disappointed.”

Curious for those of you who finish the interior walls in your garage, what are you using? Sheetrock looks awful if you use it like a garage and at $50 per sheet installed and painted it can get costly quick. I’m thinking either .375 plywood painted or something like prepainted Hardiboard. At least with plywood when you hang s bracket it’s not going anywhere.
