Brake Caliper Wind Back / Compressor Tool: Changing brake pads is one of the most common DIY service jobs you’re likely to do on your own car. As the pads wear, the pistons in the brake caliper protrude more and more from the caliper housing and will need pushing back in before you can fit your new brake pads.  Most front brake caliper pistons can simply be compressed back into place with a brake caliper compression tool but some, like the popular Volkswagen/Audi rear caliper, actually wind back in and a combination of compressing and twisting force is needed to retract them. There are various tools available from the basic compression tool to full sets.

Maximize the overhead garage storage space under your garage doors, by adding on to your existing garage door track with J-style hooks like these Praxis Model Add-a-Hooks. Hang long items like ladders, yard tools, even few spare pieces of 2×4.

Tuck medium and lightweight stuff onto shelves suspended from the ceiling. The shelves are designed to fit that unused space above the garage doors (you need 16 in. of clearance to fit a shelf and standard 12-1/2 in. high plastic bins). However, you can adjust the shelf height and put them anywhere. The only limitation is weight. We designed this 4 x 6-ft. shelf to hold about 160 lbs., a load that typical ceiling framing can safely support. It’s best to save the shelf for “deep storage,” using labeled bins with lids, because you’ll need a stepladder to reach stuff. First, find which way the joists run, then plan to hang one shelf support from three adjacent joists (Photo 2). Our joists are 24 in. apart; if yours are spaced at 16 in., skip one intermediate joist. We built ours to hold plastic bins, but if you put loose stuff up there, add 1×4 sides to keep things from falling off. Assemble the 2x4s as shown (Figure A), using 5-in. corner braces ($2 each) and 1/4-in. x 1-in. hex head lag screws (drill pilot holes first).

You don’t want to need this tool, but if you’re going to be removing a broken bolt or stud, this is the tool for the job. It features a flat jaw that slides over the remaining portion of the bolt or stud, and then a heavy duty bolt threads into the jaw to tighten it onto the stud. The XMSR1 kit comes with four jaw sizes, which fit standard and metric threads.
